Ford 7710 Problem

I posted this under Ford but figured it wouldnt hurt to put it here as well:

I am stuck on trying to repair my 7710. I really hope someone on here can help as I am getting antsy with haying around the corner.

I changed the oil in my tractor and there was coolant in it. Checked the radiator and there was oil in there too. So I took the head off and the gasket was bad, figured easy fix. Put a new gasket on it and put the head back on. I turned it over by hand and set the valves. Put in some fluid in the radiator and it came out the oil pan. Now Im thinking cracked head, so I take the head back off, throw it in the pickup and cover the block. Before I left I jumped in the cab and put the tractor in gear and set the brake since my 3 year old likes to play in the shop.

Tested the head and it was good, they milled it and sent me on my way. Turned out it was radiator leaking into oil cooler. Got a new one in and put head back on. Went to set the valves and the engine only turns over a little bit and then clunks. Thought head was hitting piston so I took the head back off and that isnt the case. Shoot I forgot it was in gear...made sure it was in neutral and still wont turn more than about a quarter of the flywheel. Took starter out to inspect and cant see any obstruction. Lifted the Back wheels off the ground and they catch too. It is like it is stuck in gear but it seems like I can go through the gears. I push the clutch in and it still doesnt free anything up. Any help would be much appreciated.

Block the clutch down separating the engine from the drive train. Also put it in neutral in case the clutch is stuck to the flywheel (not likely). Now
turning the engine should result in no external issue. If a valve is adjusted way too tight the valve could hit a piston. Did you turn it over with
the head off? It could have a chunk out of the side of a cylinder wall catching a piston. Is this the first it has been messed with since winter? Jim

I did take the head off and it still didnt turn. I also pushed the clutch in and tried to turn it...no luck. Appreciate the replies. Willing to try all, good thing it is raining this week.

I am not sure about the cylinder having a chunk in there, it did turn freely the first time and it didnt move since or start since then, not saying it isnt possible but it seems strange that it hits the exact same spots. Could the pto be the problem since it continues to run even when clutch is pushed in?

Well pulling the pan off might be the next step. Can you put the PTO in gear, and rotate the PTO shaft to see if the gearing is torn up in the PTO
drive? Just thinking outloud here. Jim

Sounds like somebody dropped something on top of a piston and not noticed when put back on. Or the valves are to tight hitting the piston. IF the pan has been off could a wrench have been left on a rod bolt and hitting the block?

Neighbor had a 7700, let a guy who was using his property for storage use it to move his inventory around. He managed to get it impossibly locked in two gears at once, requiring complete replacement of the entire transmission, housing and all.

Probably worst case scenario, hopefully yours is just locked in two gears.

I appreciate every bit of help. Ended up being the clutch. Working on that now, hopefully will get it done in the next couple of days. Again thanks for everyones input and troubleshooting.
