I have a farmall 504-diesel that refuses to start from the starter. i can pull it off and it starts quickly and runs great. I have new glow-plugs that i have confirmed are working properly with amp meter. Fuel tank has been cleaned filter changed and air purged.Starter and battery is new and it spins good. It smokes when spinning but just want fire up. Valves have been adjusted also. again it runs great after started and will plow all day. It is d-188 engine. Any ideas anyone ?

Has the injection pump timing to engine been checked/adjusted? It's critical for starting, too early or late makes starting hard with starter..

Testing and troubleshooting or tossing parts at it and hope to get lucky ?
What is the voltage WHILE cranking between the starters cast
Iron body and the threaded post the battery valve bolted to .
Not that anyone will perform the test due to a nation wide fear of multimeters . Rather spend hundreds of $$$ on parts instead .
Starter is rotating same direction as engine while running. Not throwing parts at it just replacing what I know is defective like burnt out starter and open glow plugs that draw no current when i checked them with my 300 dollar fluke amp/multimeter. I am leaning toward timing of pump. need info. on adjusting it. thanks.

Low compression will act like that. When you pull it, the engine turns over faster.

Starters turn opposite of engine!! But if you mean the starter is turning the engine clockwise when standing looking at the radiator, all is well. Jim

What is it going to cost in time and money to check ? How many rpm is spinning over fast?
