creating or recreating seat tops / covers

Good evening to all from near London Ontario Canada.
I am just starting up a small business to re store the [canvas, vinyl, leather covering] on antique farm equipment seats/ tractor seats.
I think we have the ""bugs"" worked out of our sewing equipment. Presently I have done some by hand sewing for myself and others.
If interested contact me via email.

Advertise in the Ontario Farmer and in the Old Autos newspaper...Lots of demand for upolstering in vintage vehicles, boat seats etc. Best of Luck.....whereabouts from London are you? I'm about 1 and a half hours North.

Ben

Dear Ben I am in point of fact 20 minutes east of London. One and 1/2 hours north puts you near Wingham [ correct].
Just that London is a notable place to pin point on a map. I used to at one time in the past century live in Huron county.
I would rather focus on farm equipment that the larger units such as boats or autos, since I believe that there will be those who would rather keep and use a good seat pan rather than scrap it. Since "IF" the pan has no holes and a good edge [ maybe a bit of pitting] it is more advantageous to keep rather than through out. So to find some one who will recover is often difficult since "most re upholsterres" either don't want or know how open, re work the edge flange and close them "fittingly" I have talked to some that don't even want to see farm equipment seats.

I had my original pan redone on my Farmall H about a dozen years ago. Turned out great for me as the tractor has original paint so the pan matches. He did an excellent job did not mar the lip at all.

Not trying to tell you what to do, just sharing a few thoughts that come to mind;

It would be quite costly to ship a complete seat so you are somewhat limited to either a local market or high end jobs that can justify the shipping costs.

A lot of the antique tractors people spend big money on restoring came with steel seats so no business there.

For the guys that are keeping an older tractor in day to day working order there are some pretty nice seats that can be bought at places like princess auto for what I would guess to be less than the cost of a custom re covering.

Even on this site you can buy a complete seat bottom for a Case 1070 for about $75 and an upper back for $40.

Have you considered doing quad and motorcycle seats, easier to ship and a lot of demand for them as most crack after a few years of weathering outside.

So Ben ;;Near Dungannon.
Yes the shipping might be a hassle; yet what isn't today. I will be advertising in the IHC Collectors magazine/ flyer chapter 20 Ontario. Could even set up to meet those who live near Sarnia / Port Huron >but usually the cost of shipping out ways the cost of driving.
