Farmall H tire size

My H has 12.4 tires on it, I use it for parades and hay raking, so would like a little more speed in those gears. Anyone have 13.6 on yours and have feedback?

Yes, I have 13.6/38 tires on my H and would not want anything smaller. As a matter of fact, I have been considering a new pair for mine.

13.6 will speed it,for sure. But it will look kind of funny. You should at least think about wider rims, too. Heck, you could even put 18.4s on it(seen it done),but I would not recommend it.

Has anyone made precise speed change measurements in going from 12.4 to 13.6? It doesn't seem like it would be much since the basic diameter is still 38.

The rim size is indeed 38". However,as the width goes up,so does the circumference, and outside diameter.

As you know there is really a speed jump from 4th to 5th. I had to pull a loaded feed mill to the other farm 2 miles away up a slight hill all the way. Had to go most of the way in 4th. So when I bought new tires I put on 10:00/38. Made enough difference I could stay in 5th.

Where did you find tires of 10:00 size? that sizing went out by early 1940's and it would be taller than a 13.6 tire.

Was 10-38 factory size? I would like to put 11.2-38 on my Dad's H. I find the 12.4-38 too fast with the belly mower. Would that size slow it down a lot? thanks

A 10x38 is one size smaller than a 11x 38 and for around last 40 years the 10 was resized to 10.2, the 11 was resized to 12.4. and the 10.00 was no longer made even in early 50's as it was a round tire that was cross section same as height. When the 10 was out they went to width and height was forgotten. Did you mean 10 and not 10.00? very big sizeand age difference there. I am guessing you ment 10.2 and not 10.00. A 10.00 would be about equal in total height to about a 13.6 or even a 14.9 tire. A 10.00 tire was no longer used when the first H to use 38" rubber was made. At time a 10.00 tire was made a different tire was sized like 13.75 or simular size markings. The 10.00 size was no longer in production when I was born in 1943. So I am guessing you did not realize you were using an 8o rear old sizing and not the newer sizing without a desimall point untill the current sizing of 11.2 for the old 10" and 12.4 for the old 11" and 13.6 for the old 12". In your first post you are using a sizing of 10.00 and in this you are using 10, two different size tires.

I bought an H a couple years ago that had 14.9 x 38's on it....that is a tall tire! Can't remember if I ran it down the road in 5th or not before Bryce bought it from me and I kept the tires for another tractor.

Using one manufacturer's specs for the same tire model the rolling circumference of their 12.4-38 is 178 inches and for the 13.6-38 it is 184. This is a difference of only 3.4%. So, if the tractor could go 15 mph with the smaller tires it would go 15.5 with the larger tires.
