We help each other out quite a bit, and really wanted to build me a hay wagon, so I got him the heat and materials. Ill probably have $1500 in it by the time it sees bales.
The first pic is another neighbors wagon we sorta model it off of.

round or squares ? i like the v idea. think he should be putting some bracing to the main frame from those cross pieces. maybe not finished
yet?

(quoted from post at 19:32:55 06/11/20) Big squares?

It is just a mock up right now. It is for rounds and squares. There will be a angled bumper front and back to keep rounds from falling off and quite a bit more bracing when it is done.

Rustred, I agree, and I see that Rocky ridge says that there will be bracing. When I was kid the farmer that I worked for was backing a load of hay that we had just loaded up a ramp into a barn due to coming rain. Suddenly the whole deck folded towards the front as the 2x8 cross members laid over.

Very nice!

Question - with a metal frame, how are you attaching it to the running gear? Bolted all 4 corners or something else?

Thanks!
Bill

That won't work with a tube frame. He's going to have to fasten one end and let the other float

In My opinion, the Stringers should be at the underside of the juniors, and bolstered down to the axles. The the front connection should be (as you point out) able to follow ground contours. Mighty stiff. Jim

I don’t know how far you have to travel with a
loaded wagon. I have two wagons with the same
tires. 5 miles from between my two farms, and with
8 , 4x4 wet bales or 11 4x4 dry bales, by the time I
get home the tires are as hot as a stove top . The
rubber just melts off, and even with 10 ply tires, I
got frequent blow outs. I don’t know how many
bales or how far you are going to travel, but I would
recommend putting on high speed 12 ply trailer tires
when those implement tires fail. And read the speed
rating on the side of those tires, your tractor will
probably go faster in high gear than the tires are
rated for.. My wagons only have 16 foot tops, and
same running gears as you have, they came out
from under old silage wagons. Bales can weigh a
lot more than you might think!

Hey Bruce,

I have 14l-16.1 tires on my trailer. The gear is a Westendorf 16 ton with 8 lug rims. In my opinion, Westendorf makes the best gear available.

The neighbor's running gear is a newer EZ-trail and had 14ls as well, but he needed them for a gravity box, so he put 12.5-15 tires on "temporarily" 2 years ago. He said as you do that they don't hold up. He intends on putting 14s back on but hasn't gotten around to it.

The top on the neighbors is 23 foot, mine is 24 foot. Most hay travels 1 mile up my field lane at 5 miles an hour. any hay that goes on the road usually goes on my 25 foot gooseneck trailer.

Bruce, what air pressure do you run ? I would bet you should carry around 60 or 80 psi. I was taught low air pressure causes over heating, which is the main cause of blow outs. I fully agree with the 12 ply rating and hi speed rating. Mark.

(quoted from post at 10:24:27 06/12/20) Sounds like you got it covered!

Hey Bruce, I only hope I have it covered, I definitely appreciate any an all input you can give. Your posts showing your hay hauling wagon was also an inspiration to me on this trailer. I did not realize yours was 16 foot. What size tires are on yours?

The neighbors wagon originally had an EZ trail tandem with 6 lug wheels. He said he was constantly repairing it. The last time it broke is when he bought the new EZ trail under it now. Ez-trail is built in a town just north of me and there are a lot of them around.

How big are squares? There is a straw and a camel's back. All is well until it isn't, I'm going to look in a mirror and say that again.
