safety cutoff switches

I have an older Toro mower that a previous owner cobbled the wiring.. Itstarts but then cutsoff turnsoff? when put in gear. for some reason the wires to the parking brake lever switch are bare for about 2 inches at the switch. My question, this unit has several cutoff switches, do they just cut power, or do they in some way short out power? any electrical danger in bypassing switch? I also have acraftsman mower with a reverse and seat switch that annoy me??

They use several different methods to kill the engine, depends on the model and how it is designed.

You might find a wiring diagram online with the model number.

Some are simple, some are redundant and complex. But always a good idea to fix it right. Even though you know how to properly use it doesn't mean the next person on it does!

Toro is one of the surviving lawn and garden equipment companies.
You might do well to find the manual for your mower online and buy it,
and reconstruct that wiring harness or buy a new one.

Safety switches became common around 1982. Some people remove them or
cobble some wire around them, but they might keep you and your kids or
grandkids from serious injury if they are in place.

The switch that kills the engine when you put the transmission in gear
is a neutral safety switch. It will be near the shifter. There will be
another one in or under the seat that kills the engine if you turn the
PTO on and are not in the seat.

Is it a Toro or a Toro Wheel Horse? I have two of the Wheel Horses that are covered with switches. I bought ten of them last summer and haven't needed one since.

Itis a commercial golf course mower, diesel- 11 foot cut. I have bought toro commercial units before. They were always well maintained. This one, I did not know what was beneath the sheet metal-cobbles. It runs great, when it runs. Thanks for comments.

all units out there today have several safety switches they all are tied together work in series. fix it the correct way, cause if you sell it the way it is and have no signed release you could be sued by next buyer if he gets hurt. I have seen this happen several times and it is not something you want to have to deal with. your other unit about seat and reverse switch most all of them have a setting that will bypass the reverse one. the seat issue no problem as long as your butt is on the seat. if you want off then put parking brake on and get off no issues
