1st cut done

We finished our 1st cut hay Monday. After 3 days of heavy T storms in the mid Atlantic area last week
the weather cleared out Saturday. We were baling by Sunday evening which is incredibly fast drying
considering the ground moisture. With both balers running we can wait until evening and load up
wagons fast. Our daughters helped out too, which makes things easier and fun. Here are my
breakdowns: 1 flat wagon tire, 1 broken tedder tine, 1 broken baler pickup tine and the hay elevator was
jamming at the bottom drive cog. About 4 missed ties in 2k bales. Very minor stuff. Hope your June is
going well. The long days make it the best month of the year.

Congratulations on being done. I got started this week , weather was perfect for the last few days. Today I had a little baling to do for a neighbor who also buys hay from me but their sons raked the hay too early so I told them to re-rake it and hope it is ready later in the day, if not maybe tomorrow.Still have about 2000+/- to do of my own .

Always nice to be done. I miss family help as now it is just me and the wife. We did rye silage and first crop as well but I do not even want to list all the problems we had. I might start a separate post about it when I feel like typing alot. Thanks for taking the time to post your pics for the rest of us. Tom

Up our way everybody mows into a narrow swath when the ground is moist. The lug bars will press the cut grass down into the ground just enough when you drive over it that the tedder will miss a bunch here and there that often doesn't come out until raking, and thus gets baled still wet. We give the grass 3-5 hours drying time in the swath then tedd it out. This reduces moisture in the ground as well, which of course speeds drying.

Your method is intriguing. I mowed starting about 9am and tedded the first time about 2pm. I might try
your way one of these days, but probably not 1st cut. Too thick for my courage.

That is how I usually do it too. I often mowed in the evening
and would tedd it out early the next morning before I left for
work. This year so far the ground has been dry and the hay is
a little lighter than usual so that makes for quicker drying.
