Old diesel poping like a gaser backfire

Been awhile sense I needed to use the old MF35 diesel, but it cranked right up and ready to go except it makes a loud pop every 10 seconds or so. Sounds like a gas engine backfire. I only use it with a boompole so it's works ok for that, so does anyone know what maybe causing this? Is there something I need to fix before continuing using it?

More than likely an exhaust valve that is sticking on not closing completely, or could be a weak injector firing late. Either way the quicker it is addressed the less costly the fix will be.

Injectors will pop as well . Is it popping air Back through the intake

Ok thanks, strange how it never done it before. But I guess thats how all problems start, anyway I will try to figure it before things get worse.

Is it possible there is gas in the fuel tank.
That will cause backfiring.

Pull the air cleaner out and see if it’s popping air back at any time instead of sucking

Sticky valve, bent pushrod, first thing to do is pull the valve cover and take a look.
