PROBLEM KOHLER CH 18 COMMAND ENGINE: HELP

MY LAWN TRACTOR JUST STOPPED RUNNING. WILL CRANK, & IS FASTER CRANKLING THAN BEFORE, BUT THE VALVES ARE NOT OPERATING, ONE CYL HAS ZERO COMPRESSION. ASSUME THAT THE CAMSHAFT GEAR IS STRIPPED BUT I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS NYLON, ETC.
NEED TO BASICALLY CONFIRM IF THAT IS CORRECT. IF SO, I WILL JUNK THE TROY-BILT 48" MOWER SINCE IT HAS 900 HOURS ON IT. WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW MOWER, BUT CAN'T MATCH THE QUALITY OF THIS ONE, 1995 BOUGHT.
ADVISE SOMEONE PLEASE. Can't, won't, tear into this engine just to confirm the cause. Repair too extensive.

If the valves are not moving, the next check is to see if a piston is also not moving. Pull the spark plug on the cylinder with no compression,
and stick a soda straw down there. Turn the engine if it moves, it at least has a connecting rod attached. A replacement engine from Harbor
freight, ot northern tool might be a bolt on replacement. Jim

If one cylinder has zero compression, you probably have something else wrong
besides a broken cam gear. If that engine has the steel cylinder liner,
pressurized oil system with a filter, and good maintenance, it should have gone
several thousand hours before dying.

If the rest of the mower is good, you could repower it. Lots of sources for
that on the internet.

I don't believe it's got a plastic cam gear (perhaps some did, though?).

Tks--OUTPUT SHAFT IS GOING AROUND; PISTONS ARE MOVING UP AND DOWN.
CAMSHAFT IS NOT MOVING OR ALL TAPPETS ARE NOT TOUCHING IT lol.
THIS IS A TWIN 2-CYL AND SHORT BLOCK IS $1400 AND LONG BLOCK IS $2800.
DOES ANYONE THINK IT IS A STRIPPED CAM GEAR??
FUNNY, THAT IT MADE NO NOISE WHEN IT STOPPED; JUST LIKE SOMEONE TURNED OFF THE IGN SWITCH. BUT, OF COURSE THE 3 DECK BLADES WERE CUTTING.

I HAVE THE SHOP MANUAL, IT IS ON KOHLER SITE.
I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE THE SITUATION.
TWIN OVERHEAD VALVES. HYD. LIFTERS.
APPRECIATE ALL THE COMMENTS; EVEN REPAIRING THIS, ENGINE COMES OUT, TURN UPSIDE DOWN, WHOLE FRONT OF ENGINE COMES OFF, HEADS COME OFF, LIFTERS COME OUT, CAM AND GEAR & GOVERNOR COMES OUT, AND CRANK END DANGLES, ETC.
I CAN DO ALL THAT, BUT SHOULD I;
COULD IT POSSIBILITY BE ANY THING BUT THE CAM GEAR???????

If it was using oil at all, I would not bother. If it was strong and easy starting I woud fix it. If you need it tomorrow, replacing it is
easiest, and cheapest (alternate engine) but it could just be a broken in half cam. Jim

Cam gear, crank gear, or broken cam.

Nothing to loose but your time.

If you get in and it's fixable, all the better.

Is that the Troybilt that was a rebranded Bolens? If so don't junk it those are nice mowers,I repowered a 20 HP one with an older 20 HP twin cylinder flathead
Kohler pretty easy swap.Where in the country are you located?

If I remember the gear was a just pressed on the crank & not keyed , after
some time the gear would come loose & spin & you would loose the valve train .

YES, BOLENS. THE MOWER WAS BOUGHT BY MY DAD IN '95 FOR
$5300. HAVE INVOICE; WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT. 48 DECK WAS EXTRA.

Had one in the shop a while back on a stump grinder, that would hit but not run. Tore it down and the cam lobes were worn completely off on one cylinder and half gone on the other one. New cam and lifters and it ran like a top.

No, haven't looked anymore--all valves do not move when engine cranks. Believe too much work now to go into the engine & WRONG TIME OF YEAR. Grass is growing. Will have go get new mower. But it won't be as good as this one. Troy-Bilt 48" Kohler Twin CH 18.
AND WILL MOST LIKELY PART THIS ONE OUT. IT IS OBSOLETE, YOU KNOW. JUST BOUGHT A NEW ELECTRIC CLUTCH FOR ABOUT $200. LAST YEAR. THAT KIND OF STUFF.
