For Y'all ram diesel guys this is REAL a friend if mine just burnt to the ground while on the highway, the day before he had took it in for recalls they did not address the recall on the engine fire...

I think he told me the oil light came on it lost power while checking the oil it burst into flames... His was a 2015 83K on the clock it was a 250 are 350...

funny have been on the fire dept for 50 years and seen lots of car and truck fires and Ford leads the way hands down

Coolant leaks causing fires?

Please tell me that modern engine coolant is not flammable.

While rarely the source of a fire; antifreeze has always been a flammable due to its high glycol base; even when mixed with water. With modern EGR and DPF temperatures in a diesel I can see antifreeze burning.
It could also be a coolant leak causing a overheating problem and in turn causing a potential for a fire.

I have heard anti freeze is flammable under certain conditions.

I have seen many thousands of overheated engines that didn't catch fire.

And of those that did typically it was caused from electrical, leaking fuel, or oil, not from overheating.

But supposedly it can happen. Conditions would have to be exactly right, the vapor contained and an ignition source provided. It would be hard for that to happen with a moving vehicle and a cooling fan running. I can see it more so with a marine engine or some enclosed industrial application. But evidently it is happening!
Flammable Coolant

(quoted from post at 23:59:06 05/30/20) Fiat quality . Because nothing else has ever broken or burnt
down?
ot to worry, it is soon to be Peugeot and they will fix it. :)

I have seen several coolant fires especially when we were testing egr before they went into production.

I am gonna have to talk to my Chrysler bud to get the low down on this. I was told he pulled off to the side of the road open the hood while checking the oil a very intense white fire started at the rear of the manifold. In no time it burnt to the ground all that's good is the bed the insurance is going after the dealer...

I did not ask what the other recalls where that he took it in for other than he knew they did not address the fire issue... I have read the water pump bearing can go bad I take it the heat sets the metal on fire my first thought is magnesium involved... I have having a hard time believing coolant can flame up...

BTW he has two other Diesels both Fords the whole family has Ford diesels he said he prefers the Dodge, well until this happen... He said he was gonna look at a new chebby I said you got to be kidding me...

I just remember this he jumped off a piece of equipment with the dodge and burnt out a 200 amp fuse that took out the electric power steering (crossed the jumpers) that's why he took it back to the dealer plus for some recalls. At that time replacement of the fuse got the PS back to working a $16 fuse...

Chrysler bud said EGR runs thru the PLASTIC intake manifold, he always finds a good bit of oil in the intake that and the low pressure system close by and they will go up in smke fast...

He said he had seen Chrysler replace them with a new truck...

Bingo.

Makes sense. Lots of plastic in engines these days.

Won't find magnesium. Too expensive.
