Sending Unit or Temperature Guage?

I put a new sending unit on the 550 and the guage runs right at the red line. I checked the hoses and block with the infrared tester and it’s just a little over 100degrees. How do I tell if it’s the guage or the sending unit giving a bad reading?

Typically if you remove the wire going from the gauge to the sender and ground it, the gauge will peg one way, and when you pull the wire away [open] the gauge pegs the other way. That's about as good as it gets checking out the gauge. Then the sender needs to be compatible with the gauge.

And I see below that you are just now breaking in this engine. Temperature is a very important component of this operation. A good 180 degree thermostat would go a long way in helping your cause. And maybe if you can't get a good sender, a good mechanical gauge, at least for a while, to monitor break in.

I got the new thermostat and sending unit from a White dealer, I think the thermostat is 180°.

Was the sending unit specifically for that tractor?

Did the old sender work? Can you try it?

Chances are the sending unit is not compatible with the gauge or it's defective.

You could put the sender in water and heat with a meter. It should change the needle as it warms up, or you could put a battery in the line while heating and read with the meter. Just depends on which will work for you. I have a problem with a sender in a tractor. Not for sure which is the temp, and which is the warning light. Currently both wires are on the same sender. I think I have the wrong sender, for the temperature gage hooked up, since it reads zero till the light comes on then both lights light up.
