Ignition Points

A sampling of the points and condensers changed over the years on Farmall Super A. At roughly $20.00 a set, I could have purchased an electronic ignition kit but overall I have to say, I"ve gotten reasonably good service from them and they are easy to troubleshoot and replace.

How many tractors is that stuff from? Doesn't seem possible that all that would be from one.

I've had a John Deere gas 4020 for over 15 years, it's still running the points, condenser, cap, and rotor it came with. And sparkplugs, as well. The tractor "lives" outside and is used to blow snow in the winter. (Many guys have stated on here that DEERE "gassers" are some of the most finicky tractors to keep running well, I guess I've had VERY good luck!)

I've got N.O.S. Delco replacement points, condenser, cap, and rotor and NGK sparkplugs "on the shelf" for when the day comes they are needed.

Oh, yeah, and there's at least a 95% chance that all those condensers in your "pile" are "good".

what do you do to go thru that many points I have tractors that have been mowing and other uses that I can not remember when I installed new points or do you just put in ones in every yr or so

Grandpa bought the Farmall 100 used in 1963. I have it now. use it a lot for a while ,it sits a lot for a while . Get on it and it starts right up. 1 set of points and condenser, way back. Same distributor, same rotor. Used it yesterday.

Back when I was a used tractor dealer and bought and sold all sorts of old tractors I was amazed at how some of the ratty rusty horrible beaten up old tractors still ran good even if the ignition parts looked like they came over on the Mayflower lol.........However having seen thousands of them cross the auction block and buying a good number IT WAS RARE THEIR CHARGING SYSTEMS STILL WORKED that's why I had to get good at repairing them lol

I normally do not mess with a distributor if it is working.

The points in my H are probably 10 years old, never messed with.

Points and plugs used to be a annual or semi annual tune up on cars, tractors, trucks etc. Customer says put in new points and plugs. A little more to it than that as it gave you the chance to make sure the ignition system was in good shape with automatic advance working properly, timing correct etc.

These sets were from an A, Super A, 100 and 130 that I have owned. I started with the Farmall A probably 35 years ago and tractors are used quite a bit. I currently still have two, a 100 and a 130 and the 100 is used for brush cutting, cultivating, dirt work with front blade and one point slip, so it gets a lot of hours.

bet most of those are still usable!

I have a Minnie and an Oliver, both gassers. Got them both about 30 years ago and have never changed the points, condensers or the Champion plugs in either. Don’t use either every day but both fire up when I need them. Wish I could say the same about the batteries.
