Armered Hummer

This was what was stalled along the road to Grover yesterday. I stopped and looked it over. The glass is a inch or more thick. The gun turret has a big ring gear that makes it turn. If you look carefully you can see the slot where the machine would stick out, but they took it with them. I wonder what caliber of gun they mount? I would have thought that the radiator would be shielded, but it's not and it was packed with bugs! Maybe that's why it quit? Any X gunners here? I would like to have one of these. Look at the rims and all the bolts that hold them together. There is a small hoop on the axle. I wonder what it is used to drive?

The Army will auction some off from time to time, stripped of course, but you have greater chances of winning a state lottery to get one. There're are a few places in Houston and surrounding area .that take the stripped units and go through completely..... Then restore them to nice/safe drivable Hummers.

So, are they street legal?

I heard surplus military vehicles could not be operated legally on the roads because they didn't meet DOT and emissions requirements.

Are there ways around that? Are they insurable?

Yes Steve..... They are street legal. Quite a few actually on the roads around here. Especially since the "pull out" about a year ago where Mr Big left lots to folks to fend for themselves. Just look up Army Hummer Auctions. I think San Antonio is a auction site. Must be street legal because I see the refabbed ones on the road and the Army reserves drives them on regular roads all the time. They're built here in the states. Used to be west of Houston at Stewart's and Stevenson but I think the Army may have switched vendors.

On my way home from work tonight a big van type vehicle passed me, cause I was only going about 50 mph. Later down the road I see it pulled over behind the hummer and three or four GIs in olive drab t-shirts are starting to work on the hummer. I see these hummers a lot out here. Whenever they pull a missile or install one, there is always a couple of these vehicles, and a comple of Huey helicopters guarding The operation. The door on the helicopter is open and you can see the gunner and machine gun.

I'll bet they are not cheap! I wonder if they are run flat tires or foam filled? I thought someone would know why the rims have so many bolts in them. Theym must be two piece rims, but why? When I opened the door, it about knocked me down because it's so heavy. I think the armor plate is 3/4 inch thick. I could barely get the door closed because it was so heavy sitting on an angle like that, and I'm not weak! It has a diesel engine. I'd like to know how much it weighs.

The wheels are 2 piece so the run flat insert can be used. Some of the hummers had cast magnesium run flats and some have big solid rubber ones.

The HMMWV is built only in Mishawaka, IN.
By AM General which is a company whose ancestry includes willys overland, kaiser, jeep, Studebaker and American Motors.

Other vendors add armouring and weapon systems.
Then there are other vendors that rebuild the vehicle as needed.
