Have a 3400 Ford
Model 34022A
C178418
7F29
Its Industrial Yellow and Blue
4 speed no high /low range 540 pto
Was told its an Industrial but also told its a Utility
What is difference?
Was owned by a school system and used for parking lot sweeoing with a front mounted broom. Nice shape and well maintained but needs a steering shaft upper seal and 3pt system hiccups in transit position and tach jumps all over

Question is how do i id what seals and stuff i need, My tach is different from any i have seen on e sites like this or others

From what I understand, the 40 in the model number designates it's a utility.

There is confusion over what the terms actually mean. With options offered the lines get blurred, so there is no black and white answer.

Here are some definitions I found:

Agricultural tractor means every self-propelling vehicle designed or used for drawing other vehicles or wheeled machinery but having no provision for carrying loads independently of such other vehicles, and used principally for agricultural purposes.

Industrial tractors is a term generally used to signify a tractor not built for Agricultural use. They are generally not fitted with 3-Point Linkages, just a draw bar, as the main application is for pulling operations in factories.

Utility tractor. A low to medium horsepower tractor; used primarily for pulling auxiliary equipment, but also used in construction with attachments for trenching, dozing, breaking, etc.

As for the steering seals, best open it up, see what you need first. Many times water gets down the steering tube and rust pits the shaft. It may need a speedy sleeve to cover the pits. Almost always seals can be found online or at a bearing supply. Trying to buy that kind of stuff from the dealer is usually costly and frustrating as their catalogs don't go back to the older tractors.

As for the tach, the problem is probably a dry cable. Try pulling the drive cable core out, clean and oil it. On the back of the tach is a brass piece driven by the cable. It must turn smoothly and effortlessly. If it's stiff try to get some light oil in the bushing. Might need to take the tach out, turn it face down so oil will go down into the bushing.

Try to find a shop manual and a parts book. They are available on this site, used ones on Ebay. Not that expensive and are worth the price for looking up reliable information and having it in front of you when you need it.

in the 3000 family... a

3100 was ag..could be had with 4 sp, 6sp, or 8 sp or sos trans. Ag tractors had the adjustable width front ends

3200 would be a rowcrop except no row crops were made in the 3000 family.... you have to move up to 4000, 5000, and 7000 to see rowcrop models.ie 4200, 5200, and 7200 submodels.

3400 was the utility version that had a heavier front end that was a fixed ibeam type that carried more weight than the ag tractor... other than the front end, the rest of the tractor was based on options... as to tranny, 3 pt, and pto configuration. [b:dd488a9aed]But the front end was set in stone.[/b:dd488a9aed] Was popular for front end loader tractors.

3500 was the industrial model with a 10k lb front end axle, that had king pins and a heavy nose cone over the radiator. This tractor was the one used for backhoe frontend loader tractors. [b:dd488a9aed]BUT the front axle and nose were what made it the 3500.[/b:dd488a9aed] Tranny models (including a torque converter and shuttle reverser), pto, 3pt, back hoe, front end loader were all options on the 3500...

a 3400 will share most parts with a 3000 of the same transmission configuration. but the front end and steering parts were a bit different as mentioned.

bouncing tach ... can be cable bad/dry, or the tach end needs lube, or there is/are dry parts in the actual mechanism. the nylon gear in the tach drive on the end of the generator can also be missing teeth or slipping at the cable slot. All these parts are available and reasonable.

I remember you from the other site.
Glad you made it here. This site has a
vastly superior knowledge base than that
other site.
You need to make one more step though.
For questions about your Ford click on

That said, Ford followed their own ideas
when it came to their models.
Your 3400 is almost identical to a 3000.
It has the same chassis but has a much
heavier front axle.
However, your power steering box is
identical to the 3000 steering box and
the repair on that seal is the same.
Getting back to an all purpose vs a
utility vs an industrial:
A utility had more transmission options
than an AP.
An Industrial had more transmission
options yet. And they had a stupendously
heavy front axle - much heavier than your
3400. Also, a Utility is a soft nose
model. Ie, it used a tin radiator cowel
just like a 3000.
The Industrial version of the 3000 is
called a 3500. It was a hard nose model.
Radiator cowel was nearly 1/4" thick. And
it steered much differently than yours.

Good bunch of guys there.

3400s had the 5/8 inch steering cyl rods iirc where the ag model had the 1/2 in rods... but you could interchange them although you shouldnt. I used some 5/8 inch rod cyls on a an ag model that had a front end loader on it.
