My son does custom fencing and is looking for a machine to clean fence rows and light dirt moving. He has a 323E Deere skid loader on tracks but would like something a little bigger and he keeps the skid loader nice and does not want to bang and scratch it up. We found a 450C with a backhoe for sale for $9500.Tracks and sprockets seem good. Any thoughts or things we should check or look for? Thanks Tom

Machine may start and operate just fine, but there could be water in the transmission oil. There is a bracket that attaches the hoe to the tractor, It bolts on to the steering clutch housing, and the forward end bolts on to the loader frame. There is a horizontal pin in there between the frames. Be sure all of that is tight. If it is loose, or ever has been, the steering clutch housings flex/crack/split, and allow water to seep into the transmission, The oil has a chocolate brown color. This can happen to any machine that uses rear mounted equipment, a hoe, a ripper or a winch. Sometimes you can clean out the top of the transmission cover, and the steering clutch covers, and look in the space between them, and find a crack.
