Planting well-sprouted seed potatoes ....

The ground up here is still pretty cold and I usually wait for a week or ten days anyways. The seed potatoes I bought a while back (red early ones) are well-sprouted already, I've never dealt with that before. All are pretty small so I won't be cutting them before planting. Will I expect results as good as if they are not so advanced? I'll be careful back filling to make sure I don't damage anything. Any other advice or suggestions here on the forum are welcome ..... Thanks.

I had potatoes from last year that had sprouted and had sprouts 6-10 inches long. Couple of weeks ago I sprouted them (removed all the sprouts) and left them. Yesterday I got them out and they had restarted sprouting except now they were only maybe at most a 1/2 long. I've never planted potatoes with real long sprouts but probably would work. I use an old potato planter and long sprouts get caught in the gears, etc. I think if you plant the real long ones its important not to break them off. During the winter that puts the potatoes back to sleep for a while and already planted they may rot before growing again depending the on the growing conditions.

Ya can even cut 'em up, just make sure that each chunk has a sprout or an eye. They'll all grow!

they got a jump on you, lol. pretty normal , just plant them. come up faster. usually point the sprouts up.

Last year seed potatoes were in short supply, still had a crate full of carry overs from last year and most had 12-18" sprouts. Buried sprouts and all. Usually get a 100# per 100 ft. of row. Nothing changed even with the dry year.

Dad used to tell about a couple of guys that used to compete for who got their garden in first and up. So one year the one guy planted his taters with the sprouts on and sticking out. In a few days the sprouts started turning green so when the other guy was over and he shows his garden to him. He says his taters are in and up already.
