Hi, has anyone come across a problem with
a Kohler Courage SV540S engine fitted to
a Husq LT151 ride on mower? It started
first time after standing for the winter.
Ran for a couple of hours after starting.
Two days later would not start. Battery
down to .17 volts. Jump started and
checked charging....around 14 volts.
Fitted new battery. Started ok two days
later and used. Roughly 2 days after that
battery dead again. Thinking
reg/rectifier is faulty. Anyone come
across Kohler or similar engine
discharging the battery. Understand that
there is a diode in the system but don't
know its location. All help much
appreciated. Thanks.

I had a problem with my 27hp Koehler command killing the battery, turns out the electro magnetic blade clutch was bad and drawing so much it would kill the battery.

Use a volt meter, stop guessing. Measure to see if you have a parasitic load.
Voltage regulator can be damaged if your battery is totally dead and you jump it.

It could have damaged the rectifier running it with a dead/bad battery.

If the mower has a electric clutch the charging system is essential else the clutch will be damaged.

Here's a manual. Look on about page 38 for the low amp charging system, p 40 for the high amp.

Yepper. Engine charging circuits are designed to keep charged batteries (in good condition) charged. They are not designed for bringing dead batteries back to life. Problem is that heat dissipation internally exceeds design limits and you cook the Silicon.
