A sort of follow up.

Last Sept was my first time repairing an alternator (from a JD 4020 diesel) after asking for some ideas here (maybe I asked on the JD forum?) The problem was a bad regulator which I replaced and then the alternator charged good. Keep in mind this is a tractor that is NOT used for any work of any kind. It only sits in an unheated building with other tractors and vehicles. (But it has been on tractor rides a few years back) So it sat since last Sept with maybe only 2 or 3 times being started in warm fall weather (no trying to start in cold weather - as this is MN) and this spring at the first start, it didn't charge so I had the alternator tested on a NAPA setup and it tested good - puzzled and thinking I took the alternator and it's bracket to the engine block off and cleaned it all good (paint, rust, and heavy dust) put it all back together and it charges - Thank you Lord - so this is just a further note for what to check when there is a puzzling NO CHARGE from your work.

Sorry I didn't mean to write a book, but this was interesting to me and I thought others might like it too.

First I would check for voltage at the main output stud and the #2 terminal, voltage at #1 with the ignition on, case ground as you did.

Make sure the belt is tight and the pulley is turning.

Being it was charging when parked, and then mysteriously started charging, I would suspect bug nests in and around the brushes.
