On this old I.H. 674 tractor.

I have been working on a restoration job on a 1974 I.H. 674 tractor. My question is I wonder how many of you people out here that owned one of these tractors which might had a front loader/ bucket frame on it. The reason why I am asking is that I notice the floor steps felt like they give away. Last night I took one off for cleaning. realizing they where made to feel like they where weak. These springs, spacer, and rubber cushion. I guess are to be air ride for the feet. I think I will change my over to a solid mounting to the metal bracket. I just thought I would ask out here and see what every body had to say about these floor plates on this tractor. L.O.L. it could me just my imagination maybe it was a good ideal that I just do not know about. Thanks for you comment.

I had a 674 with a loader, and don't remember anything different about the floor boards. Can't remember for sure, but I think the loader frame to the rear axle was right there and that's what I used to mount/dismount.

We had one for about 6 months back the late 1970s, great tractor but it had the slow speed transmission and no T/A and when we used it on the JD forage harvester in corn, 2 Lo was too slow and 3rd Lo was too fast, so that fall Dad traded for a 684 with T/A and it was good for the JD forage harvester. My brother still has the 684 but it requires new O-rings in the right rear brake.

okay I spent some hours today and took off the step plates. what is interesting is that some body welded steps on the bottom. This is what I understand that I should change the spring mounted screws over to bolts and a solid mounting.

Never noticed they were able to wiggle on ours. The loader frame is outside of the step so the loader frame is the stepping point for us. Our 674 without a loader is able to wiggle as you say. I never have had a problem with them being stable using them safely.
