Cleaning Fertlizer auger?

I have a small gravity wagon with a hyd. drive auger for fertilizer. How do you best clean them up after use? I have been using a hi pressure washer then dumping in some used oil and then running about 2 bu of oats thru it to try and get the oil up the inside of the tube and coat the flighting. Anyone have a better way? I guess the best would be to remove the auger from the housing and then wash and oil but that would take a lot of work with removing the hoses. Thanks Tom

The more water, - the better. Flush the whole machine out with a lot of water. That is best because you get all the corrosive stuff out. We have a 80 gallon/minute sprayer fill and I tell the guys to go down there and get wet because I want any of that residual fertilizer flushed out. Certainly coating the auger with oil can't hurt.

The fertilizer boxes on JD planters were known to rust out in a few years. Dad had me wash them out every year when we were done, and I had a big old paint brush and I painted them inside and out with used oil. They were in great shape when it was sold.
