Struck water

I was just about finished mowing I look down and spot a 1 inch pvc pipe sticking up out of the grass capped off. The next round I turned a little too late, and cut that pipe right off. I didn't see it until the next round. Water was shooting up at least 20 ft. I called the owner who lived there. He couldn't find the shut off, and couldn't find the meter in the street. He had to call the water dept. Mean while water is shooting in the air. After about a 1/2 hour the water is off. About all I could say is I'm sorry. If he had the pipe marked, and I cut it off I would feel somewhat responsible. I have cut my share of pipes off in my 25 or so years. The worst was a large iron pipe I broke the valve off, disking in an old tomato field. The water company came out and couldn't find the shut off. I guess they finally did. The field is full of houses now Stan

After you seen it you should have stopped and laid something next to it so you would have known where it was on the next round and then you wouldn't have cut the top off.

Last pipe I broke was at my son in laws double wide.

I was replacing some bad Masonite siding, pulling the pieces off and dropping them down the wall in a gap between the house and the carport.

I didn't realize there was a PVC pipe with a faucet down below. Also didn't know it was broken for about an hour.

Time I saw it the entire area was standing in 2 inches of floating garbage and trash.

Of course I didn't know where the shut off was, called the SIL, he wasn't sure either but thought it was somewhere under the front of the trailer behind the underpinning.

Another 1/2 hour looking for it...

Get it shut off, drive 10 miles one way to get the fittings, crawl under in the mud and rat droppings, glue up the fittings...

No go!

It had been plumbed with CPVC.

Back to the store...

Not a good day.

This was an abandon orchard. Broken pvc everywhere. If I had known it was pressurize I defiantly would have been more careful. Broken pvc pipe will go right through a rear tire, another reason I don't like cutting them off. Stan

I wouldn?t sweat it. I?ve drained entire water towers and or towns hitting unmarked unground pipe. You feel bad but no one has X-ray vision. Just do what you can to fix it or help get it fixed. Tomorrow will always bring a new day and another set or risk

No need to feel bad about it. Some time I will be brave enough to tell about a stunt I pulled a month ago.

Answer to your question.

One of my field owners asked me to mow an area near the house that I had never done before. I asked him is there anything there that I need to know about and he said no. So I was making my first round in first of 16 speeds with my 9ft discbine. suddenly the tractor was spinning and there was an awful clatter. It was the water well casing. In about two seconds the mower cut a small hole through it, cut the wires of course, and sheared half of the end disc off the mower.
