Round up on wheat

Do they make round up ready wheat? If not, do some farmers use round up on the wheat in the fall to kill it off so they can harvest it faster. Someone was telling me that?s how some farmers would do it. I disagreed.

"do some farmers use round up on the wheat in the fall to kill it off so they can harvest it faster"

Yes.

And it also kills and desiccates and weeds that may be present to make harvest sooner and easier.

ONE article on the subject.

Round Up and glyphosate formulations are not labeled for dessicant in cereals in the US. It is labeled for pre-harvest weed control with a 10 day pre-harvest interval. It just so happens to kill the grains and assist in standing drying.

Spraying wheat with Roundup isn?t a common practice most years, but under certain harvest conditions, I have seen it done. If for whatever reason the field of wheat is maturing at a uneven rate, a shot of Roundup will end the season for both the ripe and non ripe grain heads. Much the same as cutting with a swather, and combining with a pickup head, all the grain threshes out at the same moisture. Another reason for spraying Roundup would be if the crop had become over grown with weeds in some places. Once dead, the green weeds will go through the direct cut combine without plugging the cylinder or dumping green junk into the grain tank. Around here it is used as a means to save a crop, not a regular practice. As many broadcast red clover on wheat stands in March, so the red clover can grow after the wheat harvest, and add nitrogen to the soil. Spraying pre harvest would knock out the red clover too.

I'm going to guess your friend read a rumor on the internet and like so many others, took as the truth. There have been a lot of rumors spread about glyphosate usage on wheat causing Celiacs disease. Of course it's been proven false countless times, but the anti-GMO people aren't interested in truth.

YES!

It s not very hard to find many aerial applicators that have ripened thousands of acres of wheat.

"Spraying wheat with Roundup isn't a common practice most years".

As with so many other farming practices, it varies by region.

In my area, it's pretty much the rule, rather than the exception, 'most every year.

Never saw that happen in my part of the country and you hope to start harvesting on July 4. If wheat is still in field in fall it is no longer harvestable.
