First Planting

Don't get excited. I'm not in the field as its too wet. I always like to get at least a row of potatoes planted by the end of April and I just made it. Pretty wet roto tilling the day before but it dried up nice in the bit of sun and wind the next day for planting. Not much to see of it in this video but I shot a little of feeding the pail fed calf yesterday evening. .
Calf Feeding and Potato Planting

Both cow and calf know the routine by now quite well. She is protective but not aggressive. If I was smart I"d have sold here last fall. She lost a calf in the summer and I was never sure how it happened but now I think it just starved to death. This one would have gone the same way if I hadn't taken over feeding it. She was one of my best cows for years but not anymore. All this year's calves are heifers so I guess I could pick a replacement or two.

It?s been along time since we had cattle. I really enjoyed seeing the calf and the cattle.Hope he continues to do well for you.

(quoted from post at 14:33:09 05/01/20) That's neat, never seen a calf drink right out of a bucket.
They have to be taught to drink out of a pail. We used to do it all the time years ago when milking cows. We'd separate the milk to sell the cream and then feed the skim milk to the calves in pails. Some can be pretty stubborn but this one learned fast.

And he didn't butt the bucket! Good calf! Hated it when a bucket calf would either butt the bucket or stick his nose down in the milk and snort!!!

To teach them to drink from a pail, we would put a finger in their mouth and let them suck a little then put their head (with your finger still in their mouth) into the pail down into the milk and they usual figured it out pretty quick.

You know it Ron. That is the exact method I used. The bite mark on my finger has healed up by now but boy, those lower front teeth are sharp.
