Reluctant Spring

More nasty weather than nice it seems. And the relentless wind will drive me insane. Trying to snow this morning and temp "high" in the 30s so not very inspiring to get in the muddy frozen fields. It did warm up some yesterday and I took the opportunity to take the old Merc out for it's first run of 2020. That is the longest it has sat unused since 2014. The old flathead was ready to run and sounding great. Parked here beside the original homestead cabin for a photo.

(quoted from post at 12:47:59 04/20/20) When you opened that door, I would have sworn I smelled mohair seats! LOL
Steve, not sure if there is any mohair left in the Merc. The front seat is out of a Chrysler or Dodge caravan. The rear is from the 53 parts car and it is pretty dirty from years of neglect. I have cleaned it up some with air compressor and vacuum but don't want to get too aggressive on the old cloth upholstery. I throw used laundry detergent bottles under the seat as a cheap air freshener and it works pretty well.

Six months since I put on long underware[not the same pair] and sounds like they will be on for awhile according to the forecast..

Corn is almost knee high, wheat is headed out and it is almost 100 degrees down here in south Texas! Nothing you wanted to hear? Lol

Nice ride along. Thanks. I've been down that road before. Heading east out your driveway.

I looked at another video where the Cockshutt 5542 was running oats. Looked like a John Deere belt pickup on it? Did I see correctly?

Is the old homestead cabin in the Merc photo on your current farm site?

Very observant Ron, as that was a JD pickup on the Cockshutt combine. Yes, the century shack is literally a stone's throw from my house. It was built by my grandfather, his brother, and a cousin the first summer they came to the homestead in 1903. I did a video tour of it on youtube a year or two ago.

Rusty,

I don't remember seeing a video on your homestead cabin. Did you post it or place a link to it? I am interested in seeing it if you don't mind placing a link to it.

I tried searching in YOU TUBE for it but wasn't successful.

Thanks

Rusty,

Very interesting. Thanks for the link. Amazing what our ancestors did and lived through to get a homestead.

My grandfather homesteaded in that era also - Towner County, North Dakota in 1901.
