Just a small complaint and opportunity for a design engineer. I have a subcompact Kubota tractor, size O three point hitch, did my spring hook up of finish mower, glad I only take it off in fall and on in spring. There is very little room to hook up the PTO,like you are hugging the whole 3 point and trying to pull back this little collar (with a 50 pound spring BTW) on the PTO connector. What wonderful engineer thought that up?
Anyone that can come up with a device to hold back the ring would get my vote for inventor of the year. rant over, Stay Healthy, Joe

I bathed the coupler on my brush hog with oil - that made it a bit easier to hook up. Also found it helps to flip up the PTO shield if you have one that flips up.

You should try PULLING BACK on the collar while trying to push FORWARD with the complete unit on my rear flex bat wing shaft. The thing has a constant velocity u joint that must weigh around 40 lb. I am like you and have resorted to tape to hold the collar back a few times. Sure a poor design. By the way mine is on a large KUBOTA .

Thanks for modern technology! Old styles, you had to line everything up so the 1/4" bolt could be put through the holding the split end of the coupling knuckle to the PTO shaft. Then double nut the bolt with a pair of 7/16 wrenches, so it wouldn't come loose. Then get & use a pair of 9/16 or 5/8 wrenches to tighten up the split coupler on the PTO shaft.
Oh, then don't forget to clip the shields in place. Safety first!

The Deere belly mowers have a collar that locks back and latches when pushed on the shaft. Not that that helps you any.

I owned & bitcched about getting PTO shaft on for 5 Years, only to discover that the shield lifts up!!!!! It makes a lot easier with shield up. (I should have read the manual)

You ought to own [ rather, have previously owned] an English sports car. You'll go back in the house all the time saying "Why in the world would they design it LIKE THAT?????"

I hooked our 7' Woods finish mower to our Oliver 550 yesterday, one suggestion, position the tractor close to the mower and hook the PTO up first. Then move the mower to the tractor with a prybar and complete the hookup.

We have some of both. I don't find them that big a deal. Oil is surely a friend for the rings working easier though. I do like the old push pins much better though.

If you don't like the rear mount, don't get one of these.

Yep I agree with your rant completely. when your body is old and stiff and sore, holding yourself in an awkward position while extending your arms with sore shoulders is not pleasant.

Many people shop by price rather than features, especially first time buyers. In the lower price range market, adding an extra $50 to $100 to the cost for a better PTO coupler could loose a lot of sales.

Rich , that is how I ended up hooking it up. This finish mower has 4 wheels so moves very easy on concrete. It is just such a small space, the shield is not movable , but I don't have to worry till next Spring.Be safe and stay healthy Joe
