So long old chipper

This chipper just sat for years. I found someone who wanted it more than I did.I used it a lot on the place. It did the job with a ford industrial V8 engine. When it was running full out it made so much noise ear phones had to be used. It's called a chuck and duck by some, and this kind is no longer made because it's dangerous. The limbs are not fed into the blades. The blades pull the limb in. Real fast. It does have a belt guard. I just installed duel exhaust, and a new belt, and never used it.Stan

There are still chuck and duck chippers made believe it or not, a crew doing powerline clearing had a pretty new one and I commented to one of the guys that I didn't think they even made them anymore, he said yeah new last year I think we are the only ones that buy them anymore!

I have a friend that owns a tree service. He has some pretty hairy stories to tell about chuck and duck chippers he had to use when he was young and just getting started in tree work. From what he has told me I am amazed to see them still being used and made. The outfit that clears around the power lines here uses them. Compared to other brands they are less money.

My friend has 7 Vermeers which he feels have enough safety systems on them to be OK to use without undue danger. He also requires one worker to always be at the feed shut-off/reverser bar while someone else is putting branches in the chute.

The same thing that gregww posted about happened to a guy in the thumb of Michigan a few years ago. He was working alone when he got sucked into the chipper.

I've chipped many a truckload of chips with my Woodchuck "chuck & duck". You definitely need to pay attention when feeding it. If I am chipping nice straight limbed stuff like pine , spruce, maple, etc.. it will take brush as fast as 2 guys can feed it. It has a Ford 361 industrial engine with an Allison torque converter clutch.

That's a nice looking machine, well taken care of. Mine was almost beat to death when I got it. I had to do a valve job, and lot of body work. It caught fire one time because of the exhaust almost laying on the ground. The fire burned up one tire is all, before I got it out. The last time I used it grabbed my fork, and ran it through the blades. Stan
