Italian Ryegrass

I m in south ga and hay a Bermuda grass patch that is overgrown with volunteer winter wheat. People here call it different names. It s headed out but not dried back yet. Need to clean up the field to grow grass. Winters have been mild, so not much opportunity for burning off...not much dormancy in the grass to apply herbicide either. I ve cut it but am wondering how green I can bale it if feeding within a month? I took a soil sample and levels are low. Burn it or try and bale it? Not my land but helping a friend try and make productive.

Could you get it off the land by baling it. Then apply what you want for chemicals. Getting the soil tested is an important step.

The is an abundance of Italian rye grass baled for hay where I live. If the bales are going to be fed in a month or less I might bale it as high as 20%-25% moisture but I wouldn't stack the bales. Rye grass n Bermuda causes lower amount of Bermuda to be produced from the fields. Due to the fact that thick rye grass tends to form a mat when cut especially if not conditioned therefore it can be slow to dry to 15% moisture content. If cut before mature it makes decent hay for cows/calves.

Thanks for the info. Talking about rain tonight and tomorrow so may never know. If it gets rained on I may rake and burn it. I thought it might keep a month maybe at higher moistures.
