Gas vs. diesel prices

Was very surprised in the gas prices thread below that diesel was often double (or more) the price of gas. In SW Washington, gas is $2.33 at Safeway, diesel is $2.34. The high prices are not a surprise, given our "tax everything to death" system, but the price spread elsewhere is curious.

I think there are a couple factors at play. One, while many of the cars are staying home, there has been less of a slowdown in the amount of truck miles traveled. (That will probably change in the coming weeks.) And many construction projects are still going, etc, diesel demand has not dropped that much yet. Two, with the huge drop in gas consumption, there is also a huge surplus of ethanol on the market. While some ethanol producers are shutting down, there is still a large supply sitting there for market.

I can say my person gas consumption is much reduced, but diesel use has gone up as I am at home getting things done around the place.

Here in Tulsa ethanol gas is around 1.35
the convenience store near my house sells only ethanol free gas and his price is 1.35 a gallon.
makes you wonder

Gas in NC is 1.36 but diesel is 2.29, wonder why your diesel is almost the same as gas? Or why our diesel is so high.

Bingo.

Demand for gasoline is much reduced. Diesel? Not so much.

Anyone planning to run out and pay a huge premium for a new diesel car or even truck?

Given the fact that good roads cost, who better to pay for the cost of keeping them up and in good shape than those that use them. Best way to get the $ is charge the users. In my humble opinion, raise the gas taxes if more $ are needed to keep the roads in good shape. Other than that, build more toll roads like E470 in the Denver area. Take your choice.

I should have mentioned in my initial post- the near-parity of gas and diesel prices in SW Washington has been that way for years. I do know our gas tax is among the highest in the nation- that may account for the high gas prices. Not sure about road diesel tax.

I am paying more for home heating fuel here in NY, than most are paying for over the road diesel! Coumo's method of forcing NY to green energy!

Today most stations in Rochester, MN are selling E10 gasoline for around $1.399/ gallon. On the south side of town one KwikTrip and a Fleet Farm seem to be in a gas war with prices 15 to 20 cents below the rest.

The interesting thing is ethanol mixed gasoline E-10, E15 and E-60 are all about the same price today. Usually E15 and E60 are significantly less than E-10. Is the price of ethanol now as high or higher than gasoline?
