I picked up a 1952 case DC today. it has the weight on the front unlike other models and wonder if that's a change up thing? has some stuck valves in it. will pull head tomorrow.

no I have a standard D and the this axle is not even close. this is factory dc4 but want to know if it was this year they changed the front ends. the dc4's I have seen don't have that weight on the front. yes rear axle is adjustable, same as any row crop.

The front weight is to keep the front end down when lifting something heavy on the eagle hitch. The weight replaced the need for the solid cast wheels that were also used on DC's. Depending on what you were going to lift, sometimes even both were used. That weight is not as common as the solid cast wheels were.

this one has both. that weight goes down to the pivot pin for axle and is part of it. you cant remove the weight.

That is what we call a Heart Shaped front axle,, only last few years of production came with them, but I have seen LOTS of them installed on older units as case offered the front end as a kit to upgrade older units to this axle,, yes D Series like the S Series had foot clutch in 53-54 model years, live hyd and live pto were options starting in 1952,, hyd came in 1949, the DC-4 in the pic is a 53 or 54 model,, foot clutch was offered in the DI and SI industrial units long before that I have early 40's models with it

Great buy on that. Looks real good in the pictures. I bet those front wheels weigh close to 200 pounds too.

When you get the head off take a few pictures of what you find. I have unstuck valves with PB Plaster and time then air hammer tapping on head

ok thanks. so I presume they were like this from 52-56 as I was looking things up. this one is 52 model and wonder what year foot clutch came out. it appears like the front axle might be farther ahead giving it a longer wheel base than the early ones.

ya I will, I just pound the valves out with a punch and clean up the bores with a valve guide brush to get the rust and carbon out clean up the valves totally and seats and inspect for valve wear. just leaving them in and loosening them is nuts. why keep the carbon in there to further wear the guides guides and risk sticking when it gets hot. if things looks reasonably ok guide will get oiled and reassembled. never know it maybe due for a valve job anyhow.

Yes that is what the heartshaped front axle did while adding more front end weight when using the Eagle Hitch if yours is a 52 its a late one with foot clutch,, nice find

it actually has the hand clutch. maybe they came out in late 52? with the foot clutch... don't know.

Wonderful machine, Rustred. I inherited one on a piece of property in Montana back in the early 80's and it would pull the garage over if the cable didn't break! Mine started much better turning the crank than pushing the starter button, but never knew if it was a magneto thing or the slower start speed. Was a little frightened of that chunk of crooked iron attached to the front of a running engine, but it never tossed me anywhere.

sorry I was going by the trans brake style,, guessed it was later,, only very late 52 models had a foot clutch only seen one in my life have a foot clutch
