JD 70 Ticking Noise

I have a 1953 John Deere 70 that has ticking noise that we hear from the valve cover area. I have removed the cover and inspected the push rods, valve tappet levers, and the shaft and brackets that hold the tappet assembly together with no wear or damage found. I adjusted the tappet clearance to .022 with the motor cold and we still get the noise. I am wondering, where do I check next?

Wayne welcome to YT! I?m not much of a Deere 2 cylinder guy but you are not being fooled by an exhaust leak between the head and manifold are you? Are the spark plugs tight? Did these still have the petcocks? Neither one is leaking?

When I have a difficult to find valve train noise, I start it up with the cover off, put the feeler gauge in each valve with the engine idling slowly.

When you find the one making noise, determine why. It can simply be out of adjustment, or something worn.

How wide is Your feeler guage? Use one that is only 1/4 in wide -- the valve and the rocker more than not have a worn area -- there is part of the rocker that dose not get used so in reality there is a unlevel surface! Thus a loose lifter -- Not always the case but worth checking. Roy
