I'm looking for some type of strong wire for a project. Tried a paper clip and it didn't last. I'm thinking stainless. Suggestions would de appreciated. Thank you.

I have some reel ends of stainless steel lashing wire I will give you. It?s either 0.038" or 0.045". Not sure which I have on hand. My email is open if you want send me your address.
Lashing wire

Stainless steel, contrary to popular belief, is not stronger than regular steel. There are a number of different grades. Some are stronger than some grades of non stainless steel but the strongest are non stainless. The wire in my welder seems too be very strong.

<a href="https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/safetywire.php?clickkey=4386">Aircraft safety wire</a> is probably the best choice. Another possibility is <a href="https://www.amazon.com/American-Fishing-Wire-Trolling-Single/dp/B004VZKIHU">monel trolling line</a> or <a href="https://www.cabelas.com/product/MALIN-COMPANY-INC-MALIN-LEADER-WIRE/2972327.uts?productVariantId=6110928&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=02081434&rid=20&ds_rl=1246492&ds_rl=1246531&ds_rl=1247882&ds_rl=1252079&gclid=CjwKCAjwssD0BRBIEiwA-JP5rNT34ncPCRZLCYJzwm0UU9lzLgJbsuwoXZUTZEUdAtMTw1Ge3pEQDBoCwWUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds">monel fishing leader</a.

How fine? I used wire from my wire feed several times, not flux cored..035 diameter. Can get SS Aluminum, thicker, or mild steel and all in between.

Thats a severe lack of information for a question that could have a nearly endless amount of suggestions. Maybe a little more info will help narrow it down.

Being that you tried a paperclip I am guessing you do not need very much wire.

I have built numerous things from the solid core wire from a choke control cable, tough stuff.

Not enough info. Do you need to load it in tension or compression? i.e. push or pull? Diameter limitations? Do you need to form Z bend on the ends or how will you connect? Piano wire is good for tension or compression but not real flexible (think landing gear on radion control airplanes). It can be bent into springs and Z bends in some diameters.

Steel fishing leaders are generally available in most sporting goods stores. They are flexible and usually have a loop or swivel at each end. Cabelas sells rolls of steel leader. I saw some that is 61 pound test. Your wire needs depends on how you're using it. Can you give us a clue?

MJ ..... ever notice that quite often a person posts a question but then must never read the replies, or if they do they don't reply to a question like yours that would give a whole lot more info if they did. Looks like Royboy wandered off and is having a cold one on a Saturday afternoon.

It kind of matters what you mean by "strong". Do you mean high tensile strength? Or do actually need something that's malleable so it can be repeatedly bent without breaking?

Back in the days when I worked in aerospace, I learned that the wire used in TOW missiles was the highest tensile strength wire made at the time. It is really fine stuff; 3750 meters is spooled on a small bobbin. I think the process for making this wire is a trade secret, but I seem to recall it had to be very low carbon to get the required tensile strength in such a fine wire. And of course it is a one-time use item.

A surprisingly tough wire is the material used in surveyor's flags, if you happen to have some of those around. We used to use flags for all kinds of things, including as gas welding rods. You can get 100 flags for 8 bucks at HD.

Not to be nosey, but it would help if we knew how long the wire should be and if it flexed a lot. The application would indicate the type and diameter of wire.
