Lockdown day four

Well wife is still coughing a lot, but not getting worse either, so that's good. Had a little fever for a short time yesterday. But she looks better today, so we'll see.

I decided it was time to put the cattle out, so I had to get off my backside and Finnish the fence. Hung a few steel gates to start. The first one divides the yard in half.

All the wooden posts had been pushed up some from frost, so I pushed them back down with the loader. I think that was because they were set in the fall and the ground was so wet, most of them pushed up water when I pushed them down. Hopefully when the dirt settles that won't happen again. They are set 4' deep.

This Gate was a mistake, for some reason I thought it would be better to have two instead of one. Didn't take long to figure out that was a mistake. I'll likely change it to a single gate.

The wooden gate took a while to build. I like it tho.

Eventually that run to the left will be all wood too, but it is going to take some cleanup to do it because there is a bunch of old concrete and such buried there.

Steers really liked their new home. They kinda went crazy for a while.

I even had time to put together a feed bunk from some old lumber that was laying around. Not sure what I'll do today, but think I'll at least be cleaning the hog pen. Man they sure do make a lot of fertilizer now that they are getting bigger. The big ones must be 220 pounds now. They have appointments to become ham next month.
Happy steers

You mentioned the steers going crazy. Pa told a story from back in the 30?s. Pa?s home farm was about 2 miles south of town opposite old #52. Pa was able to play football in high school and because the school was in the center of town the football was practiced and played in the flat part of Theisen?s cow pasture west of the creek on the west end of town. Pa was in his last year (I believe he went 12) when he finally got Grandpa talked into coming to watch a game. Pa was anxious and excited and when it was over he rushed to get Granpa?s thoughts on the game.
Grandpa said ?it?s like when we put the calves out on spring pasture. They run from one end to the other with tails in the air, running and jumping, and butting heads.?

About an hour and a 1/2 from me..Im straight east of the capital about5 miles just short of the MN WI border.

Nice looking fences and gates. It helps the gates stay straight if you put a block under them so all the weight isn't on the hinge. On the big gates I have that I use often I made floating hinges on the bottom hinge and put a cultivator rubber wheel on the end. Sure makes them open easy and keeps them straight.

I've been working on a bud box crowding pen and working chute I have been going to finish for too many years while I have been home from work. Might even get it done.

Some real nice progress, feels good at the end of the day too ! I have a utility pole set for a fence post along my property line, shallow, well drained area. When set, I'd figure I'd get back over to it with backfill, seeing going deeper would not work. Been years, that darned post is pretty darned tight now. I like em deeper than this was as a rule. It was a rock or what I forget, hand dug, figures, now I have a backhoe LOL ! It carries 2 strands and a posted sign, nothing significant.

Jon looks good. some ideas. On the wooden gate put a block/bracket on the open side to help support it when shut, that will help keep it from sagging. On your double gates I like to use gates that are two/three feet wider then the opening. That way they over lap. Then when you chain them they are supported in two places and that makes them be stronger when cattle push on them.

Good to see the steers out and able to run and enjoy life. I bought a show bull some yrs. ago and he had a ring in his nose (mandatory if they are shown). He was so happy to have it removed, and he knows I did it....I'm still his hero.
Fencing is looking nice. I like the wooden gate.

I like watching critters when they get in a new area, they're so happy....especially when they find the feed bunk.

Unfortunately JDseller is right. Put a block under the wood gate or it will sag. We have nailed, screwed and bolted them together and no matter what that treated wood will swell when wet and shrink when dry and gate says. We have started adding a "leg" on the free side of the gate that runs to the ground. Gotta pick up gate just a bit to open it. But it stays straight. Kingdom is looking great!
