Was traveling on my "therapy drive" yesterday and noted a local farm rig in the field applying fertilizer, ammonia I suppose. The field was soybeans last year and hadn't received any fall tillage. Tractor was a big newer CAT with the big tracks and looked like getting good traction. I thought it would be much too wet.

It probably is too wet. Next summer in August or September if you could fly over that field in a small plane you might just see his tracks. The corn planted in those tracks might be shorter. You can't see compaction from the ground but from the air after the crop is up and has grown to full height it is blatant. Last September a fella flew me over my farm to look at the crops. My fields showed tracks from compaction which surprised me. A neighbor's crops showed the tracks his tractor made last spring going two directions. This neighbor has Quad tracks and he gets out there a little before anyone else because he can.

It was good going here Wednesday and yesterday. Ground was in good shape, it was plenty dry, I was surprised. Today the snow and sleet never melted off. We were in the 20's all day. West Central Iowa here.
