Day one of lock down

Since it appears that my wife has the virus, although they won't test to be sure, I can't go to work. So it's project time. Started with a couple projects that have been on the list a while by fixing my friend Jeff's trailer. The axles got bent so I replaced it with a new one.

Just torched off the u-bolts and used new.

The worst part of a job like this, greasing the bearings. You can get these axles now with sealed bearings, I highly recommend it. Sure wish someone would invent a good and clean way to do this job. I haven't found a way better than this yet.

All done with that job. Wasn't too bad, took a couple hours.

Next was to tackle the leaking loader cylinders on the dc.

cvphoto10587.jpg

First plan was to trade out those cylinders for another pair I have, but it turned out they are different. So then I took this one apart to see if I could get new seals. Turns out that end seal that leaked is adjustable by just tightening those 4 bolts. I had done that, but dirt and grime had filled the space and it couldn't tighten anymore. Once that was cleaned out it tightened right up and sealed up again. Can't believe I've poured as many gallons of oil in there and spread them about the yard because I didn't know how it worked. Oh well, it's fixed now and I know how to fix it if it leaks again. Lol. That and a good nap took care of the first day of at least 10 before I can go back to work. Don't know what I'll do today, going to be a bit colder.

I hope your family gets thru this without too many problems. I would let the cylinder leak on the DC, you wont have to grease the wheel bearings on that side. LOL Tale care. Bill

So what's in the end of the cylinders? Chevrons?

Somewhere in my travels I have used someone's "bearing packer". It's been a long time, but it seems that was an awful mess.

I hope you and your wife will be okay. As far as greasing wheel bearings I do it the same way you do. Get yourself a box of those throw away gloves to wear for that job. I have larger hands so have to get the larger ones. A friend of my dad would use a grease gun with a needle fitting and go between the rollers with the needle to grease bearings but it is slow. Last idea- they do make a gizmo ?bearing packer? you use with a grease gun- I never tried one so don?t know how good they are. I enjoy your posts and ?today?s funny.? Keep up the good work- spring is around the corner.

Our local Cenex station had a bearing packer, i took some bearings into town, had em packed, but bye the time i took 4 four new clean shop towels with me to lay them on and cover them up, with a clean towel, did i really gain much!!

I bought a grease packer that I best describe as a china mans hat. It does a really nice job. You can watch the grease come right up through the bearings.

I have used those bearing packers and was not all that impressed. Much quicker and more thorough to just do it the old fashioned way.

I have one of those, I found I got just as greasy using it as this way. The trouble was keeping it clean between uses. By the time I cleaned it and the got greasy anyway I figured it was more trouble than it was worth.

Jon, We are hoping for the best for your wife.

That's still the very best way to pack bearings. I know some say to wear nitrile gloves, but I never liked them.

Larry

I thought I was the only one that still packed bearings that way. Only I use HF el cheapo gloves to save my hands and make clean up a little easier.

Best wishes to your wife and hopefully she recovers quickly. Be careful with that nap though as I can testify it can become addicting.

had the same problem, and decided to just do it the old-fashioned way.

Jonf,

Hope your wife gets well soon without any complications... and that you do not catch it.

Take care while working on any projects so you don't get injured you - nobody wants to have to go to a doctors office or hospital right now.

Praying for your wife the worst thing about project is usually I have to run into town to get something and when your Quarantine you can?t do that

Hope the Missus gets better soon and you avoid the mess. At least you're not cooped up inside in an apartment or other confined space. Happy projects are in your future!! Will keep your mind and hands occupied.

I saved the box mine came in. I just stick it back in the box and put it on the shelf for next time I need it. Box keeps it clean.

Jon, praying for your wife, about greasing them bearings, my friend has a tool just for greasing bearings, he used it when he did the bearings on my camper.

I have one of those, and found it to be more trouble than it was worth. Did get the grease in good tho

I put mine in a ziploc when I store it. Sometimes it's just easier to do it the old fashioned way.

Have never used a bearing packer.

We lost a bearing on the trailer while moving up here years ago. Broke down in the dark, after hours, and just across the street from a mechanic's shop....who just happened to be working late that night. He got the trailer pulled across the street into his garage, but found he did not have any more bearings that size. He ended up taking the bearings off of his own trailer and installing them on ours. Then, when our bearing failed, it bent the spindle. He took it off and re-welded it. Wouldn't let us pay for anything since he never used any new parts! Took him the better part of 3 hours to get us on the road again. And all that while his wife and infant child waited for him to finish for the evening.

Don't know what ever happened to his shop as once we finished moving (a couple years later), his garage was closed down. Wherever he is, I hope he somehow knows that there's a couple folks out there that think he's a genuine angel in the flesh!!

Anyway, he used a needle attachment on his grease gun and showed me how to get grease into every nook & cranny of the bearings. When I went to grease the bearings on the other 3 wheels, all of the original grease was still there......doing nothing. Just packed inside, and not a bit of it inside the actual bearings. Still trying to figure out why a trailer manufacturer in Ft. Worth couldn't figure out that grease needed to be IN the bearings.

Hope she gets well real soon. I just use the nitrile gloves for things like that, oil changes etc. If they survive, I wipe, wash them down, leave so the inside dries out, otherwise toss when done. Used oil and similar, really not good to be in contact with ones skin. I've got old gloves for grease work, when having to lube a piece of equipment like the backhoe etc.

Sorry to hear of your wife's illness, that's hitting too close to home!

Praying for her recovery and protection for you and the other family members.

What lockdown? There's hundreds of pickops pulling fishing boats between Mitchell and the Mo river MN walleye fishermen

Wishing you and your family the best jon. Honestly hope she doesn't have that nasty V. Good job on the trailer and the loader. Like your equipment. Take care of momma. RB

Jon I hope your wife and you have minimal effects from this virus. A large majority do come out of it OK.

I posted a few days back about my sister having it. It's been about a week and a half and she just about back to normal. Neither one of her boys got it, and neither did her boyfriend. Best wishes to gour wice for a speedy recovery ! I always enjoy looking at your project posts ! Very nice !

In Texas, the governor says that fishing is a necessary convenience.............so have at it. I do. Boat ramp parking lots are over half full. Only question is, how many hate mongers will you flush! Well, I'm retired, earned my easy life, gas is $1.65, boat and truck are paid for, gives me something to do since I have fixed and cleaned up everything I can think of........so why not?
