PTO won t shift

I have a 1973 Massey Ferguson 175 and when the tractor is on I can t shift the pto into gear so I have to turn the tractor off and shift it into gear then turn the tractor back on. I don t have a single clue on why it does this so anything would be helpful.

Are you using the clutch? I don't think it's an independent PTO on those. Does the PTO shaft spin all the time? With it being a 2 stage clutch, it's possible the second stage is going bad.

I guess I would look at the clutch linkage first. Your
175 MF should have a two stage clutch. Half way
depressed the wheels stop turning, fully depressed
the pto should also stop rotating. Good chance an
adjustment on the clutch linkage could be in order,
or maybe something under the floorboards like mud
or a stick is stopping the pedal from going full stroke

Yes I am using the clutch. It?s weird because theirs like 3
options with the pto neutral, regular one and one where when
the tractor moves the pto moves but when the tractor is in
neutral and I let go of the clutch nothing spins

Check the free pedal adjustment first. That is the external adjustment where the arm clamps onto the shaft that goes into the clutch housing. When you press the pedal down to the point where the throw out bearing contacts the clutch fingers, there should be 1/8 inch between the arm and the housing. A little change has a big affect.

I am not a Massey man, but I think the one
selection is ground speed pto or something like
that, figure out which direction puts the pto to
achieve 540 pto at 2000 rpm. I ran a 165 MF 45
years ago, as a kid, so my memory is a bit foggy

One is ground driven, when the tractor moves pto moves equal speed. Used for hay rake etc. One is live
power driven by the two stage clutch, used for baler picker etc. and of course neutral is no pto.

I believe the 175 was available with either the "live" (two stage clutch) or independent (hydraulic clutch) PTO. First thing to figure out is which you have.

If you have 3 positions on the PTO lever (forward is ground driven, center is neutral, and to the rear is engine driven) you have a "live" PTO and should have a two stage clutch. Pushing the clutch about half way down should stop travel and allow shifting the transmission, the PTO will continue turning. Fully depressing the clutch should stop travel and stop the PTO.

The independent PTO is operated by a hydraulic clutch pack which is controlled by the PTO lever. The lever has two positions; on or off.

Not sure this is totally correct as it has been a while since I used them.

Check the clutch linkage. Neighbors MF65 had two positions on the linkage, one only disconnected the transmission. The other made for a lot more clutch pedal travel and stopped the forward motion half-way down. All the way stopped the pto also. There was a pin that had to be placed in a different hole to switch.

Thank you all for your help! but I figured it out. All I did was
adjust the clutch linkage and it seems like it?s working fine
now.

The rest of the responders have given you the scoop on adjustment issues. The position where the PTO doesn't turn when you let out the clutch is likely the ground drive position. The PTO will turn if you move the tractor.
