Repairing a fuel sending unit

Is there a way to repair a fuel sending
unit. Not sure what to do but it has to
be a way to repair em if they aren't
rusted out too bad.

replicating the restiance coil would be the biggest problem. Floats are avaible. Most of the failures are of the restiance coil.

Believe me, - you're not going to be able to fix it. Get ahold of Jerry at Evergreen Restoration (www.evergreengauges.com). He's been around tractor gauges and really knows his stuff.

My experience is that the wire gets worn into and you have an open circuit.....or wiper tip gets worn off and can't touch the wire wound resistive element. The ability to repair the open depends on the type of material and whether or not you can unwind a strand and solder it on the non-wiper-contact side. The wiper on the other hand, if the tip is worn off, may be able to make a tear drop out of high temp (95% tin-5% lead) solder and get it to hold.

After markets are available and work just fine for me.

I have fixed many of them. Not something I do unless I cannot find a replacement (aftermarket or original). The wire gets worn, rubbed through and finally breaks in the originals. You just buy a roll of the correct type resistor wire and rewind it. The wire is cheap but it takes patience. For example, I just rewound the gas tank sending unit for a 1969 Toyota truck. I needed 22 feet of 33 gauge Nichrome wire that is 13.2 ohms per foot and .0071" diameter. A 100 foot roll of the special resistor wire cost me $9.

When fixing a sender, you unwind the wire and measure what the total length was. Then find out what the max resistance was supposed to be and order new wire to match.

Thanks for the info looks like on this one the bushing is worn that the float pivots on and doesn't let the contacts connect

Unless it is something really exotic or really pricey new generic ones will be much more practical. Not going to say they can't be fixed. As an old OKie told me one time nothing is impossible. Just how long and how much.
