Hand Cranking Tractor

Hello,
I have a 1937 Farmall F20 that is started by hand crank only. I am wanting to replace the spring that pushes the pin out when you go to start the tractor so it doesn't catch when the motor starts spinning. I've been looking on Stiner and other website and I cannot find the spring I need.

Do you know where I can get one? Is it easy to install?

Thanks!

How do you use it now? The normal thrust from the crankshaft pin should push the shaft out. Does the crank stay spinning after the engine starts? Sorry I don't know where you can find a spring. Probably try a salvage yard as a first try

Go to McMaster.com armed with some dimensions, they have a HUGE variety of springs available.

Are you finding much in the way of F-20 parts in general? That should tell you something about the possibility of finding something as obscure as the crank starter return spring.

Really your only hopes will be finding a good used one off a parts tractor, or matching a generic spring from a source like McMaster Carr as others have suggested.

If you have the spring and it's relatively intact you should be able to get the important dimensions, outer diameter, wire diameter, number of coils. All you need is CLOSE.

Be sure that the shafts/joints from the
hand crank going into the contact point
on the front of the crank shaft is rust
free and well oiled. Oiling that shaft is
often overlooked and can cause sticking.
