Clear skies

I have been grading my backyard with some dirt that I pulled out behind the barn to build a trailer parking pad there. Got up this morning to about a 2" flood in the back yard. We got a lot of rain last night.
In only a couple hours the water was down to a few large puddles, but that AIN'T good enough.
The first thing I did was to go around to all my culverts,5, and pull leaves away that were restricting flow. I started with the one the crosses under the road 400 feet in front of the house and worked upstream from there.
Also, the land behind me (that I used to own) drains toward me, and always has, but would cross to the adjacent property, a park in the northeast corner of my yard. That area was a bit clogged up with leaves and grass.
Then, I went out with the back blade and did some grading using the water to identify high spots that were blocking the flow.
Being very wet I did track up some of the new grade but that is ok. I can rework that when things dry out.
We are expecting some heavy weather tonight and probably a lot of rain. I will re-examine the grades then and make some adjustments. There is one area that I need to cut a little swale to move the water but I did not want to cut up the surrounding sod.
Just playtime during our "stay at home". Your playtime may vary! LOL

John you could just raise an area around your house two feet and not have to worry about all this. I calculate that it would take just 2,000 truck loads, and should be done in 21 weeks.

LOL
My planning in 1984, the year before we built, I took groundwater into consideration. First, I must say, we are 10 miles from where I grew up and on some of the highest ground around the immediate area. I tell people that
I grew up in a swamp. Not really. However, the ground was low and we easily got stuck in a field if we
tried to get in too soon. Even in July I could hand dig a hole 2-3 feet and hit water.
So, when our builder in 1985 asked how deep in the ground I wanted the basement I told him I wanted the
basement floor 12" higher than the grade of soybean field we were standing in. I want a full walkout
basement. As such, my deck, off the dinning room, is 9' above the back yard. When he asked why I
reverted to "I grew up in a swamp" line. I do not want any water in my basement.
Local building code required a sump pit in the basement. In 35 years there has never been a pump in the
pit.
As for backfil around the house, I hauled about 1400 yards, 5 yards at a time and shaped it with my 1951
8N with a Wagner loader. The water this morning was still 8" lower than my basement floor.
Lastly, my gutters are piped into 4" pvc at all 4 corners of the house and routed to lower ground that
is graded to flow away from the house.
I'll pass on more fill dirt. Thanks

I was a nice warm day here too. I was in the woods putting some gravel around the fence where the dog wore a path patrolling. I looked over and the critters were heading to the barn. In just a few minutes it was pouring and even some hail. I was soaked when I finally get to the barn, then it stopped and sunny again.
