Ok, im not a Virginia resident. Driving on INTERSTATE 77 yesterday in Virginia. Passed an older pickup truck, a little beat up but I've seen worse- did not have a license plate on the front or rear per se. Had what looked like a homemade metal license plate on rear with the word "FARM" in block red letters above the word "USE" on a white background. Is this some rebel flaunting the law or can you actually get around buying tags for your vehicle if you say its for farm use only? Remember, this vehicle was seen on the interstate and not some rural farm to market dirt road. Growing up we had a truck or two we did not tag but it rarely saw pavement.

Legal in Virginia. The law is a farm use vehicle can be driven up to 75 miles from the owners farm as long as its used for farm use and also some other things like going to the grocery store, dump etc.Must be identified as FARM USE OR FARM VEHICLE on the vehicle. Can buy the tags at TSC,Farm Bureau office etc or paint your own farm use on the vehicle.Has to be titled in the owners name but no insurance is required by the state but crazy not to have it.I run a couple Farm Use trucks.

I have wondered about that also. Only reason I noticed is on the show "Moonshiners" Tim's truck has Farm Use plates.

How about that. In Virginia of all states no less. thanks traditional farmer, I figured you would be by.

California has a farm use plate, which is smaller than the regular pate. The plates are very hard to get, at least it was for my brother, 75 miles is about the max. Your dog doesn't need to be tied in the back with the plate also. Stan

Pennsylvania has them too. Restrictions for day use only and within certain distance of farm.See them often here in the Mushroom Capital.

In VA. You can run a Waterman plate also as long as you are a comerical fisherman, oyster man ect.

Virginia also has state issued farm vehicle plates for vehicles used on farms, exempts the farmer/truck from some DOT requirements and are 1/2 the price of tags on regular trucks. Can drive the
vehicle anywhere but the exemption for the driver is limited to 150 miles.I'm I do not know the exact law on that.

NY has a farm plate also. We call them dollar plates because the registration costs 1 dollar a year . By law you can only travel between farms you work and to the dump. I have never heard of it being enforced. You didn?t use to have to carry insurance, but that has changed. You do now. I have one on my dump truck.

In Virginia farmers, cotton gins, fertilizer distributors, and peanut buyers are exempt from licensing vehicles. The fertilizer distributor I do repair work for has a laminated copy of the state code in the cab of each truck. So when they get stopped they can show it to law enforcement. ( yes some of them aren?t away of the exemption)

Mi has a farm plate cost is based on the weight of the vehicle. They used to or may still have it a special farm plate. it cost then about 25 bucks and was for going from farm to bin or closet elevator. I think it also was only good to go from the closet supply to the farm like for fertilizer and such. Or from farm to farm.
The regular farm plate is good I believe for up to 150 mile radius of the farm. That might be air miles too.

County policeman told me he'd never heard of farm use plates,I gave him a copy of the pamphlet DMV puts out and can be found in every DMV office explaining farm use plates.
