Gear noise and oil type

Hello all. I rebuilt my allis wd 2 or 3 years ago. Mild build for a stock class puller and also fixed a noisy second gear. Used a shaft from a wd power unit by grandpa had that was never really used due to being a power unit and gears were like new. After mixing the two shafts I have had a horrible gear noise, loud enough to hear over the straight pipe. It was filled with 80w90 and I see alot of people using hy translation.

Im wondering if the lighter oil will lighten up some of the noise and also if the gears will break in and get quiet er. The only quiet gear is road gear which is straight through aka direct drive. Thanks

New against used will make a noise but if it is as bad ans you sound like it is I am betting you
have something else going on, bad bearing , wrong pitch gears or something else. Usually used
against new will whine for a while but go away after Running awhile.

No, a hy/tran fluid will not fix the
noise, if there is any noticeable change
it will be worse. The straight cut gears
in a WD transmission make more noise than
a wd45 but yours sounds excessive.I think
it needs to come back apart and be fixed
correctly.

I am normally not into snake oil, but the lucas gear treatment really quieted my older tractors down.

I agree, or used on used from another machine since gears wear in a pattern and swapping patterns are cause for noise. Keep your oil as is. Heavier oil quiets things down.

Yup, same here.

Swapped in some 85-140W into a noisy diff. Quieted down a fair amount.

And of course, one does not want to go the route of a used car salesman and add sawdust...

I would try some Lucas or similar snake oil. If no better then take it
apart and see what's wrong.
Take it apart and see what's wrong is actually the better first step.

WDs prior to Serial number 127007 had the sliding gear transmissions which were noisy. Ours was really noisy in 4th gear. We used
heavy oil and kept it up pretty full which seemed to help. At serial number 127007 Allis put in a newly designed constant mesh
transmission. Many think the change came with the WD45 but that was not so. WD45 production officially started with serial number
146607.

Funny you make that explicit remark. I worked tug boats my Jr. and Sr. high school summers and one of those falls, I "invested" in my first vehicle....a 47 Chebby, hot water 6, babbit beariing pickup with 3 on the tree as I recall. In checking the oil at the used car lot the oil looked really black and thick.....my first thought was that I will stop by the filling station and get some oil and change it first thing. The truck wasn't smoking when I bought it.

Changed the oil to something like 30W HD and cranked her up.....you would have thought I had a mosquito spraying machine....the thing just made a big bluish fog. I don;t remember what I did with it but I was a happy camper when I drove it off the lot.....short lived glitter!
