Onan Engine

I'm looking for a source to obtain a rebuildable Onan P220G 20 hp engine. Alternatively, a well-priced mid-90's Toro Wheel Horse 520H Garden Tractor with the same engine. Any tips on where to look would be appreciated. Item located within easy shipping distance from Denver would be ideal.

You don't see many Onan P220's for sale by themselves. There are still Wheelhorse/Toro 520Hs out there on craigslist that have those engines. I see those tractors all the time for sale in the mid-atlantic area. Which is the route I took when I needed a P220 for a Cub Cadet 982. I got lucky and found one from a 520H in terrific condition on ebay for $475, built in 1995. They are very hard to find with the spec number to match the 982, but you can use the Toro/Wheelhorse -- just mainly need to swap the oil pan, bearing plate, exhaust manifolds, and wiring. Both have a 1-1/8 shaft about the same length.

You can get a spec number chart and look up the differences to figure how to match engine to engine. What tractor are you putting it in? I guess the most common tractors where the John Deere 420, Wheelhorse 520H, and Cub Cadet 982/1912 (which actually had the B48, similar to the P220).

Great powerful engines -- I love the way they sound, just need a little more TLC due to the aluminum cylinders. Talk to Robert Kummer (boomer) at [email protected]. He is a wealth of information as much anyone and also sells parts. He loves to talk.

Also, I'll look on craigslist in my area. You can always check ebay too.

Here is one I saw the other day in Southbend Indiana ($450): https://southbend.craigslist.org/grd/d/plymouth-onan-p220-20hp-out-of-wheel/7071360130.html

Looks like you are in the 'deadzone' in Colorado for Onan P220s and 520H's. Best bet would be to look anywhere you can find one, and use Fastenal shipping -- about $150. Otherwise the Toro/Wheelhorse tractors I'm seeing are going for about $900-1500 or so around here.

Hope that helps.

They were built in South Bend Indiana, probably scarce around Denver. Last week there was a really nice looking one on Rockford Illinois Craig's list for I think about 1500. There's is a big Toro dealer in Rockford so there's lots of Wheel Horses around, that's where I get parts in the rare case I would need something.

I've got two of them Onan powered Wheel Horses, The P218 just rolled over 1900 hours, Noticed the P220 just today had 1300.0 hrs. on it. Both gas hogs but plenty of power.

Yes I would call boomer. I think his main line of work. Is on the engine part of Onan. I know more about the generator side.

That is an Onan with a new name. When Cummins bought Onan. They sold that line to Linamar. Along with all the parts stock.

I've got one I pulled off a wheel horse that got scrapped. Condition
unknown, but hour meter showed about 500 hrs. If you're interested in
shipping from Ohio, I can take a look at it and get you an idea of its
condition.

Thanks, Bret. The application is a replacement for the 70's Onan engine provided for the Rutan designed Quickie Q-1 single place airplane kit. The original Onan engine is underpowered at altitude and I want to maintain the same horizontally opposed design and similar weight as the original engine, but get a little more power. I appreciate any help.
