Was just looking at a satellite map of Clear Lake, Iowa. It had labeled the site of the plane crash of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Clicking on the site brings up photos. There is a memorial of "wings" nearby with name Roger T. Peterson which is most likely the pilot of the plane. Looks like a walking trail between 2 farm fields leading to the site. Has anyone been there? Come summer, I may visit there. Thanks

I was a 8th grader when they died, but i was there at the Surfball Room, 40 years later, they sat us at a table with another couple from the area who were there the night the music died, they were like 13 or 14 yrs old the guys dad took them there and agreed to pick them up later. On the way home they were, they said about 2 miles east of the crash site, they said they heard a small sound but thought nothing about it,now it was cold, very cold about 30-35 below zero, noise will travel a long ways then! People were having fun but everybody was sharing what they remembered. I did get to talk to his two band members, the one has a herd of Simmental cattle! We had a good chat, he was buying hay from the Yankton South Dakota area, that year!

We live about 40 miles from the crash site, and have been there a couple of times with family members that wanted to see it. It's a half mile hike from the road to the memorial. Wear comfortable shoes and it can be muddy at times too. Stop at the Surf ballroom too and take the tour. Loads of musical history there. The room next to the stage, the white walls have been signed by performers, you can spend a lot of time there reading all the signatures.

I was reading not long ago that Richie Valens had a terrible fear of flying because a plane crashed in his highschool yard killing classmates. I found it,read link and if you look he attended the school.
Crash

To me Roger T Peterson is the ornithologist that wrote bird guides. T for Tory. Don't know what you have there.

It is substantially upgraded to concrete and displays. 10 or so years back it was a few items in the fence row, and an arrow pointing to a spot where the corn stalks were cut. 15 feet out in the field. The chamber of commerce has a single sheet road map to find it. From my point of view, the feeling of history was more valid than the decorations. The field of dreams was different in that there were far more touristy things there. My son and I pitched a few balls around the bases. Not bad. Jim

I seen a you tube clip on that school where that happened,There are also you tube clips about his girlfriend Donna, she never did forgive her dad for not letting her go to his last performance in California, before he went on tour, it was interesting!

Seems like I recall that Waylon Jennings was also on the show, and was supposed to have a seat on the plane, but gave it up to The Big Bopper because Bopper was ill, and Jennings didn't think Bopper should ride the cold bus. Anybody know about that?

Yeah, he was there, Buddy and Waylon go back a long way,Buddy had given him money years prior, and told him to see this guy and learn how to play the guitar, and he did. But Dion and the Belmonts were there too, he had a little different version of what happened, what i seen on you tube!He said there was no coin flip,And he is the only one that's still living as far as i know he was living in southern Florida last i heard! There is a lot of good you tube clip to watch. But the one interesting point when Waylon and the others on the bus got to the motel in Fargo, they walked in and said we want the rooms next to Buddy, Ritchie and the Booper, the guy at the desk said haven't you heard, they didnt make it!! No cell phones or CB's,in them days!

(quoted from post at 13:07:43 03/24/20) Seems like I recall that Waylon Jennings was also on the show, and was supposed to have a seat on the plane, but gave it up to The Big Bopper because Bopper was ill, and Jennings didn't think Bopper should ride the cold bus. Anybody know about that?

Seems to me that Jennings and The Big Bopper were teasing each other just before they parted on their respective rides and Bopper said 'hope your bus freezes' Jennings said something about a plane crash. That haunted Waylon for a long time.
