9n rear axle housing question

Hello all,
I?m reaching out for some advice on an issue I?ve run into trying to restore my 39? 9n. Last night I was trying to press a new bearing race into the left axle housing. Long story short I ended up with a hair line crack where the race seats in the housing. I?m not sure if I should braze it, have it welded, start looking for a replacement ,or just leave it alone. Here is a picture of the crack.

Where are you located? I am in N/C Indiana, I have some early 9-N casting parts and some 2-N castings. Too much to store would give someone a great deal. Most free. Email open. joe

If it's above the oil level, and most likely it's working days are over, it will probably not hurt anything.

But if worried about it, I would find another casting instead of trying to repair it.

it shouldnt be a problem (magnaflux the casting and you'll probably find a few more!), but you will ALWAYS worry about it. Used parts are cheap.

Thanks for the feed back, I think I might try brazing and see if that goes well. If not I guess I'll be looking for a new casting.

When you braze this, the bore will almost certainly shrink a little when it cools, making the bearing fit even tighter, plus deform the bore slightly out of round.

Unless you have the equipment to check/bore/correct this, I don't think brazing it is a good plan.

I would replace it with a good used "trumpet", IIRC, all 9N and 2N "trumpets" (from the same side) will interchange.

good point, I'm trying a little harder to save this housing because the flange that mounts to the brake backing plate is a lot thinner than later 9ns that I've seen. It must be a really early feature that was original to the tractor. It's a three digit serial so I'm shooting for as original as I can get.

On a 39 that's never going to see a days work again I would drive the cup out put bearing retainer on it and keep it as my own little secret...
