Having a hard time getting spark to my plugs on new to me Ferguson. I have fire at the coil but none at the plugs
Should I have old fashion copper core wires?

Carbon wires may not be optimum, but should work, if no spark on any plugs I would suspect bad cap or rotor.

Check the spark at each cap terminal also.

A test light is a convenient way (it won't light, but use the point held above the cap terminal), or use a length of wire grounded one one end, held 1/4 inch above the metal piece in the cap. It should give a blue hot spark while cranking.

If no spark, could be the cap or rotor carbon tracked, moisture under the cap, wrong or broken rotor.

Assuming they're not defective, the resistance wires should be fine. As I recall, their resistance should be 1 kilohm per foot or less.

How are you determining there is no spark at the plugs? Did you take a lead loose, stick a screwdriver in the end and attempt to draw an arc to ground? If you can get 1/4" arc that way, but you can't get a plug to arc, then the plugs are probably fouled.

All of the answers are correct. Just follow the juice, coil to the distributor, to the rotor, to the cap, to the plug wires. And the best part, NO Computers!

I agree with Old. If it has points, you need genuine steel or copper plug wires.

You can even run bailing wire for test leads in place of a proper set of wires if they don't touch anything except at the cap and plug.

About 30 years ago one old fellow was bringing a tractor to shows around here with barbed wire for plug wires.

Check if there's spark right at the high-tension "nipples" on the distributor cap where the sparkplug wires plug in.

It's possible for a mis-match of rotor and cap and possibly even breaker points that will result in spark occurring when the outer tip of the rotor is between the terminals in the cap, rather than when it is directly at one of the terminals.

If still 6 volt original type system be sure to use spark plug wires that actually have wire in them. I've seen too many Fords that would not start with the carbon core wires the dealer sold in their tune up packs.
