Mono slope 1 year

Been a year since I built our first mono slope barn, many
people thought it would not pay off in Louisiana because of
relatively mild temperatures, those same people may not have
factored in rain and manurial value. Was it expensive? Yes,
will it pay off? I think so, backgrounded calves have gained
around 15% more in the barn than on drylot, I don?t have to
rely on past figures to calculate this because I have had two
barns full if calves and seven pens of drylot calves in the time
frame, took the barn calves to a higher weight because of how
I planned to sell them. I built a 196 x 48 barn, I plan to build
another one this year that is slightly longer and easier
to clean, have to add crop land now to utilize manure, a calf
equals an acres worth.

A barn oriented to the South to allow sunshine and light while protecting the livestock, increased circulation and air movement are possible because of the high side and the low side, one of those things that does not seem like it will really work until you see what happens.

Here's a pic. I just googled it... as I was not familiar with the term either.

(quoted from post at 11:18:38 03/15/20) What is mono slope?

Sound like what they call a Loafing Shed here in Kansas.
Lean-to type roof, open to the south, closed-in on three sides.

On a 30,000 head feed yard I worked we found some cattle to do well under the barn most did better not in the barn so the cattle that worked in the barn went in the barn . I?ve been reading of cow calf operations ran entirely under a barn is the latest thing

We've finished cattle in ours for the past 7 years in northeastern SD. The big advantages here are wind protection and no mud to deal with. Secondary benefits are shade in summer and sunlight clear across the barn in winter (ours is open to the south as well, and sun angles change a lot with the seasons here).

This amounts to an improvement in ADG of .33 to .50 pounds per head per day (on the same feed intake as before). Thank you for sharing your input- I had long thought that these barns had their place mostly in the upper midwest.

itto that here in Texas. Lost mine in tornado couple years ago. Wind got under that south open side and away it went.

One of the major advantages to a monoslope here in northwest Iowa is keeping the manure runoff from the feedlot out of our streams and rivers.

LAA We have two of those type of sheds. They work great in most weather. Especially hot weather, so they should be a good long term investment for you.

The only trouble we have had is the one shed will drift snow clear to the back wall if the wind comes form the correct direction. The funny thing is it is not a direct wind into the shed that does it. A wind with blowing snow going straight over the top of the roof will drift it back inside. The snow hooks around the roof peak and gets sucked back into the shed. Since you do not get snow you should never have this type of issue.

My second youngest son is looking to build one to calve in. He has more cows than pasture and uses dry lots to feed them in but wants a place that is protected to calve in. He then would rotate calves in the shed the balance of the year.

I've been thinking about building one myself. Not any of them around here though. I'd love to see some pictures of anyone's barn who has one.

Looks like a loafing shed to me . That?s a lot better
than the feed lot had that was almost fully enclosed
and had a barn cleaner running under the whole
thing
