have a 6300 JD tractor. 12 speed transmission. A-B-C-D, 1-2-3-R.
mostly used for moving and feeding hay.
C-2 which is a perfect gear for me has been grinding and most of the time cant get it in. lately all my gears seem to be grinding and not working as they should. also my PTO quit working as it should. seems to be slipping the clutch when put in a bind. not sure if one has anything to do with the other. thanks for any input yall may have

Sometimes there's not much else you can do but start pulling the tractor apart, and fixing what you find. If you can't do that yourself, then you need to send it off to someone who can.

I would suspect that the shifting synchronizers in the transmission have been chewed up, but it's only a guess because I can't see inside your tractor. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart. The transmission will have to come completely apart to replace them as they are on the shafts with the gears. It's not something you can adjust away by turning a screw.

While it's apart you should replace the main and PTO clutches because there's no additional labor, only parts cost. If you wait, and it turns out you still have problems, then you get to pay the mechanic to pull it all down again.

Of course I have no idea what your mechanical ability is or the facilities you have to work in.

Although I'm not very familiar with this series tractor I wonder if traction clutch is fully disengaging when pedal is depressed? Due to fact this model appears to have a hyd operated clutch I think there should be a pressure test port for clutch operating piston.

We had that happen on a JD 440 skidder, about 1969, it was a warped clutch disc. But as others mentioned yours probably had a hydraulic clutch, like our 4600.

I agree. If the master/slave system is low on fluid, or out of adjustment, or bypassing in the master, it will have limited travel, and not disengage
the master clutch. If this is so, fixing the clutch release mechanism will fix much of the issue. If it does, make sure you are stopped when shifting,
and put it in a different gear before the one that has a poor syncronizer. THis is a workaround until you decide to do a major repair of the trans. If
to joy on the clutch linkage, there could be issues with a warped driven disk, or partially broken pressure plate, that cause drag between the flywheel,
and the pressure plate spinning the driven friction disk. Jim
