I have a power steering problem on my 1978 Ford 535 tractor. The power steering doesnt work and it is making bubbles inside the reservoir can. It has been acting up for a while then completely quit working. Any thoughts on what it might be? Thanks in advance.

How long has it been since the filter in
the PS reservoir was changed? If it has
been a while or you don't know I would
start there. If the filter is known to be
relatively new then I would check the
return line to the pump for cracks,
breaks or possible loose fittings where
it could suck air. As with any hydraulic
pump if it is sucking air on the return
side it won't prime.

When mine makes bubbles it's usually low on fluid, I like to fill mine with the engine running to circulate the fluid and get all of the air out.

Probably low on fluid.

Fill it, start it up, it will probably take more oil as the air works out. It may be noisy if there is air in the oil, it will eventually work out.

If it starts working when full of oil, look for a leak. If it's a high pressure leak, it may only leak when the engine is running and the wheel is being turned. Look at the cylinder seals, and hoses. If it's a return leak, look at the return line, seals, pump cover, etc. I believe this is an engine mounted, gear driven pump. If so, it may be the pump shaft seal leaking into the crankcase.

It had a leaking line , we replaced the line , filled it up , and it didnt work. it actually pushed oil out of the reservior. It was run without the powersteering working for an hour or 2. could the pump be bad from running it empty?

If it's pushing oil out of the tank the filter has a hole in it and needs changed, if you had burnt the pump up it would be making noise or wouldn't be pumping.
You actually need to replace the filter but to check everything fill the reservoir and install the cap, start the engine and let it run for 20-30 seconds then shut it off, remove the cap and refill the reservoir, start the engine again and work the steering wheel left and right a couple of times then shut the engine off and refill the reservoir again, repeat this process until the steering works properly and the reservoir stays full.
MIL's 5600 has a small leak at the sector, not bad enough to require fixing but still will lose enough fluid after a few weeks to need refilled, the filter was bad and it would shoot fluid out the fill hole with the engine running, I'd refill it using the same process I just said until we changed the filter last year, it still has that small leak but I can now fill the reservoir with the engine running.

i will try this , Thanks

I just looked through the filters available here and don"t see one listed for the model 535. The power steering fluid reservoir is mounted to the frame to the top and rear of the engine on the left side. Does anyone know which filter this will take?

Your tractor has the remote reservoir like on the older 65-69 ag tractors, you need NH filter # C7NN3N538A and rubber seal # C5NN3D587B if it doesn't come with the filter.
Be careful not to lose the oil fill cap, they cost over $120 these days.

thank you sir, i"ll be sure not to loose my gold fill cap.
