Stabilizers on Ford 3-pt hitch

On an older Ford, 8N up through 4000, when is appropriate to use the stabilizer bars? Or when is it appropriate to leave them off? For example, scraping the gravel road. Let it sway side to side, or make it rigid with the bars.

I use them on bush hog, finish mower, post hole digger, box blade, scraper blade, spiked tooth drag, landscape rake, all purpose plow, boompole, and forks. I dont use them on mold board plow or disc.

Control is the over riding reason to use them, or not. Blades, and mowers for example need to be located in alignment with the motion of the tractor to work as the operator intends. If used with a plow, or disk harrow, the tractor would be difficult to steer as needed. The tail wagging the dog, or the tail just wagging are both deciding factors. Jim

"scraping the gravel road" Go out and make a round with them unhooked. Then go out and make a round with them hooked. You will see for yourself which way it works best.

I always hook up at least one of the bars on my 4000 row crop. It's a pain to get them both hooked up on a row crop so I don't bother with both on lighter implements like the yard rake or boom.

I got a set from this site for my 2000 and it made a world of difference. I use a Ford 3-pt rake and have a lot of side-slopes and use them with the York rake on the driveways. Keeps it straight when the rake is angled. Just have to be careful to put them on with the crook and angles in the right location.

For really heavy implements and pto implements you want them on to prevent to much play or the implement . Plowing them set so the plow can move a little bit independently ot the tractor

I use them all the time on the mower and box blade. Didn't even know about them when I had my 1st 8n 36 years ago, but sure wish I had. They would have been great on the grader blade also. I may be remembering incorrectly, but don't see where they would have helped on the plow and disc though.
