Oliver 880 head

The head on my 880 gas is cracked in the chamber, between the valves. The machine shop where I take things wants about a grand to repair the crack, by grinding out the crack, heating the entire head, then spray welding to replace the material removed by grinding and seal the crack. I'm guessing this is a good way to fix it and I trust the guy doing it, but I wonder if I can get a similar repair done anywhere for less money. I don't want to pin it, think welding is best. Does anyone have a go to place that might have a more reasonable price? I'm in South west Ohio, but I can travel awhile for the right deal. Thanks!

Hard to fix properly -- look for a good replacement:
Maibach Tractor (Ohio)

Tractorparts ASAP also sells used heads.

Sometimes you have to watch the used ones sold could of been repaired before too. I'll take an unrepaired one over anything except a NEW one. Once a crack always a crack is what I say.

For that grand will you get the head back ready to go or is that just the welding? Usually when a head is welded the seats and guides are removed and replaced with new so When you get the head back it has new seats and guides and the head has been surfaced. The last two heads I had welded were four cylinder and cost me close to a thousand ready to put back on the tractor so I think your machine shop is about right on the price. The machine shop told me it was a flat rate whether there is one crack or five cracks.
