2008 ford with 5.4 engine what to replace with

I have a 2008 ford f 250 HD 4x4 . The engine is getting tired. What if any other ford gasoline engines are a direct bolt in as to bell housing. Truck has a strong automatic transmission. Thanks to all. I would consider another 5.4 if low milage , perhaps from a car? I call this truck my redneck special with new mudgrip studded tires , and large brush guard on front. Thinking maybe I should just sell as I am 75, too to be out in the mud and snow!!

The only bolt in engine is the same type that is currently in it. Thay is also the only engine that the wiring will fit and the computer will recognize. The days of swapping anything into anything are long gone. Money can do anything, but you may as well buy another truck. I get asked about doing diesel swaps, I tell people to find a diesel truck you like, and swap your truck for it.

I would get with the local salvage yard, ask them what will fit. They have cross reference information of what parts will interchange.

Then if you do find a good, low mileage engine, go ahead and pay the core charge, keep your old engine until you get the swap done.

That way if anything is different, missing, or broken, you will still have the original parts to take off the original engine. Sometimes the salvage yard employees are less than gentle when pulling the engine, things get cut and ripped instead of disconnected. Saves running back and forth, having to buy parts.

Then once the job is complete, return the old engine for the core charge.

But, seriously think this through. You are investing a considerable amount of money and time in this. Is it really going to be worth it? I understand sometimes we do what we have to do, just be sure you are up to the challenge and have the resources.

Most cars have 4.6 looks the same almost. Just a shorter stroke. Did you make it to Princeton pull the other day. I looked for a light Case. Took the 435 but got 4th in 3500. To heavy on front. Then in 4000 still put to much on front. I had a 03 f250 5.4. It was good to me. In 16 traded it for a 4 door f250 4x4 with a 6.2 gas. It has about a 100 hp more. And a 6 speed auto. 2.73 gears. Milage about the same. It will pull a trailer. Also had airbags.

What's wrong with the 5.4 you have now? Why is it not repairable? A junk yard replacement may not be any better.

I would sale they are beach to work on don't need to test my ability's...... I am not that dedicated anymore to chase all the issues : )

I know of a 2010 Tundra near here with a 5.7l , 160 000 + miles, not kms and it still drives better than most new trucks.

Nothing wrong with a 5.4, my 03 f-150 has 188,000 on it and uses one quart of oil between changes. Still runs great. They didn?t put them in cars, only trucks. You should be able to find a good one in a salvage yard. Plenty of wrecked trucks that should have a good engine.

fell before the pull broke knee cap few ribs etc. Being this old is not fun, doc is saying particle or new knee in few months.

Bill,
With all your money, just sell it and buy another truck.
In my younger days I would pull the engine and rebuilt it.
Back in those days an 8 cylinder engine rebuild would cost $800 for Valve job, reman cam, lifter, turn the crank, bore engine, new pistons and rings, freeze plugs, oil pump, water pump, fuel pump, gasket kit and new hoses. A 6 cylinder was $600. Those days have passed and no way could I even think of doing that kind of work. And you are older than me.
Geo.

Complete new timing chains (5) cost 3200 at ford new engine 3800 (jasper) plus install. with just chains you still have a used engine with 200K. no brainer!!!

5.4 was a truck engine only by that point. Your 5.4 also has variable valve timing, which the 4.6 does not have.

I have to agree with George. Just break down and buy a new truck. It helps keep you from worrying about how your heirs will waste any money they inherit. I've got a 6.2 gas in a one ton and love it.
